Bald eagles are one of North America’s most recognizable avian predators. These majestic birds are equally renowned for their remarkable construction projects, which are arguably the largest nests built by any bird species on the continent. The sheer scale of their nesting efforts transforms a simple avian home into a massive, enduring structure. This structure is continually expanded over time, resulting in structures that challenge the very limits of what a tree branch can support.

The Astonishing Weight and Dimensions

The active bald eagle nest, often referred to as an aerie, is a massive structure. An average active nest typically measures between five and six feet in diameter and two to four feet in depth. A regularly used aerie can weigh approximately 1,000 pounds due to the sheer volume of material. Some historical nests have reached monumental proportions, exceeding this average size. The largest recorded nest, found in St. Petersburg, Florida, measured 9.5 feet in diameter, was 20 feet deep, and weighed nearly 6,000 pounds, or three tons, holding the record for the largest tree nest ever recorded for any animal species.

Construction: Why Nests Grow So Large

The incredible weight of an active aerie is a consequence of the eagle pair’s approach to construction. The foundation is built from large sticks and branches, interwoven to create a sturdy platform. Both the male and female participate in gathering these materials. After the foundation is established, the eagles fill the structure’s gaps with softer materials like moss, grass, and plant stalks, and line the central depression (the nest cup) with fine materials for insulation. Eagles do not build a new nest every year; instead, they continuously add new sticks and reinforcement to the existing structure, causing the aerie to grow steadily larger and heavier.

The Longevity of Eagle Nests

The immense weight of these nests is possible because eagle pairs dedicate themselves to a single nest site over many seasons. Bald eagles exhibit strong nest site fidelity, returning to the same territory and often the same aerie year after year. This continuous reuse means the nests are generational homes that accumulate material over decades, driving the extreme sizes recorded in the historical record. Some nesting territories have been used continuously for over half a century by successive pairs of eagles. One well-documented nest in Ohio, for instance, was actively used by a pair for 34 consecutive years.

Nest Location and Structural Support

Selecting a suitable nesting site depends heavily on structural integrity due to the immense weight an established aerie can attain. Eagles choose to build their nests high up in large, sturdy trees, typically selecting the tallest tree nearby. This provides the birds with easy flight access and a clear view of their territory. The nest is usually positioned in the main crotch of the tree, close to the trunk, where the branches are thickest and capable of bearing the load. The tree must support a dynamic weight that can exceed 1,000 pounds, which occasionally leads to the collapse of the supporting branches; if large trees are scarce, eagles may adapt by building on cliffs, rock promontories, or man-made structures.
