Some people take their dose 30 to 60 minutes before exercise for this reason, pairing it with a small snack. Consistency over weeks matters more than precise timing on any given day. Studies showing results ran for at least 8 weeks, so this isn’t something you’ll notice after a few days.
Side Effects and Safety Limits
L-carnitine has no established upper intake level, but the NIH notes that doses around 3 g (3,000 mg) per day can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and a distinctive fishy body odor. Staying at or below 2,500 mg daily keeps most people well clear of these issues. People with kidney disease or seizure disorders should avoid supplementation, as it can cause muscle weakness in those with uremia and may trigger seizures in susceptible individuals.
There’s also a longer-term consideration worth knowing about. Gut bacteria can convert carnitine into a compound called trimethylamine, which the liver then turns into TMAO. Elevated TMAO levels have been linked to increased cardiovascular risk. The connection is still being studied, but research suggests that a high-fiber diet can help suppress this conversion by shifting the composition of gut bacteria. If you’re supplementing daily for months, eating plenty of fiber is a reasonable precaution.

The strongest evidence for L-carnitine and weight loss comes from studies in overweight and obese adults, particularly those who are also exercising. This makes sense biologically: people carrying more body fat have more fatty acid substrate available for the carnitine shuttle to transport. Clinical trials have specifically targeted people with a BMI of 25 or higher, and the meta-analyses showing significant results drew primarily from this population.
If you’re already lean, L-carnitine is unlikely to produce noticeable fat loss. It may still offer recovery and performance benefits at athletic doses, but for body composition changes, the supplement appears to work best when there’s meaningful excess fat to mobilize. Pairing it with regular exercise, especially moderate to high intensity cardio or resistance training, gives carnitine the metabolic conditions where it can do the most work.
