Melatonin is dosed in milligrams (mg), not grams, and that distinction matters. A single gram of melatonin would be 1,000 mg, which is roughly 100 to 500 times more than anyone should take. The standard adult dose ranges from 1 to 5 mg, and the highest prescribed dose in clinical settings tops out at 10 mg per night. Anything significantly above 10 mg enters territory where side effects become more likely and no clear sleep benefit has been established.
Standard Doses for Adults
For short-term insomnia, a typical starting dose is 2 mg taken one to two hours before bedtime. For ongoing sleep difficulties, doctors may gradually increase the dose, but the ceiling is generally 10 mg per night. Jet lag is usually treated with 3 mg, sometimes up to 6 mg, for no more than five days.
Most sleep researchers agree that lower doses, often between 0.5 and 3 mg, are enough to raise melatonin to the levels your body naturally produces at night. Higher doses don’t necessarily produce better sleep. They can actually cause grogginess, headaches, and daytime drowsiness the next morning, which defeats the purpose.
Why “Too Much” Is Hard to Pin Down
Unlike prescription drugs, melatonin has no formally established lethal dose in humans. No one has died from a melatonin overdose alone, and there’s no published case of fatal toxicity. That makes it tempting to treat the supplement as harmless, but “not lethal” and “safe at any amount” are very different things.
Taking large doses (anything well above 10 mg) can cause nausea, dizziness, irritability, and vivid nightmares. Some people experience a paradoxical effect where high doses actually worsen sleep quality. Melatonin also interacts with your body’s hormone regulation, and flooding your system with far more than it would ever produce naturally can disrupt your internal clock rather than support it.
Long-Term Use and Heart Risks
A large study reviewing five years of health records from over 130,000 adults with insomnia found that those who used melatonin for at least 12 months had roughly a 90% higher chance of developing heart failure compared to similar adults who didn’t take it (4.6% vs. 2.7%). People taking melatonin long-term were also nearly 3.5 times more likely to be hospitalized for heart failure. The study, highlighted by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, found an association rather than proof that melatonin directly causes heart problems. But it raised enough concern to question the assumption that nightly melatonin use for months or years is risk-free.
What’s Actually in Your Supplement
One of the biggest risks with melatonin isn’t necessarily the dose you choose. It’s the dose you actually get. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine tested a range of commercially available melatonin supplements and found that more than 71% of them contained melatonin levels that differed from the label by more than 10%. The actual content ranged from 83% less to 478% more than what was listed on the bottle. Even different batches of the same product varied by as much as 465%.
This means a supplement labeled “5 mg” could contain anywhere from less than 1 mg to nearly 24 mg. Some tested products also contained serotonin, a compound that can cause side effects of its own. If you’re trying to keep your dose low and consistent, the supplement itself may be working against you.
Children Are Especially Vulnerable
Melatonin poisoning calls to U.S. poison control centers increased 530% over a decade, jumping from 8,337 in 2012 to 52,563 in 2021. The vast majority of these were accidental ingestions, and 84% involved children under six. Children are more sensitive to melatonin’s effects because of their smaller body size and developing hormonal systems. A dose that causes mild drowsiness in an adult can cause significant symptoms in a young child. Practical Dose Guidelines
For most adults, the sweet spot is between 0.5 and 5 mg, taken one to two hours before you want to fall asleep. Start at the lowest dose available and only increase if you see no effect after several nights. Going above 10 mg is not supported by evidence for better sleep and increases the likelihood of side effects.
To put the original question in perspective: one gram (1,000 mg) of melatonin is absolutely too much. So is 100 mg. Even 20 mg is more than clinical practice supports. The real threshold where problems start is much lower than most people assume, especially given how unreliable supplement labels can be. If you’re regularly taking more than 5 mg without clear benefit, the dose likely isn’t the solution to your sleep problem.
