How Much Milk Should I Be Pumping? By Age

Most people with an established milk supply pump about 2 to 4 ounces per session, though this varies widely depending on the time of day, how old your baby is, and whether you’re pumping in addition to nursing or exclusively pumping. If you’re in the early days postpartum and getting far less than that, you’re not behind. Your body ramps up production gradually over the first few weeks.

What’s Normal in the First Two Weeks

On day one, your body produces colostrum in tiny amounts, roughly a teaspoon per feeding. A newborn’s stomach holds only about 20 mL (less than an ounce) at birth, so these small volumes are exactly what your baby needs. If you’re pumping in these early days and collecting what looks like almost nothing, that’s expected.

Over the first two weeks, your milk transitions from colostrum to mature milk and volume climbs steadily. By the end of week two, many people begin producing 2 to 4 ounces per session. Some get there sooner, some later. The key driver during this window is frequency: the more often you remove milk (whether by nursing or pumping), the stronger the signal your body gets to increase production.

Daily Volume by Baby’s Age

A large review of breastfeeding studies found that healthy, exclusively breastfed infants take in predictable daily totals during the first six months:

  • 1 month: about 21 ounces (624 mL) per day
  • 3 months: about 25 ounces (735 mL) per day
  • 6 months: about 25 ounces (729 mL) per day

Notice that intake levels off around 3 months rather than continuing to climb. Breast milk composition changes as your baby grows, becoming more calorie-dense, so the volume doesn’t need to keep increasing. The normal range is wide, though. Studies of U.S. infants found daily intake anywhere from about 15 to 40 ounces at 6 months. If your baby is gaining weight well and producing enough wet diapers, your supply is working even if the numbers seem low compared to someone else’s.

Per-Session Expectations

Once your supply is established (typically by 4 to 6 weeks postpartum), pumping 2 to 4 ounces per session is a solid benchmark. But context matters a lot. If you pump first thing in the morning, you’ll likely get more because prolactin levels peak overnight. An afternoon session might yield noticeably less. Neither output is a problem.

If you’re exclusively pumping, you can estimate your target by dividing your baby’s total daily need by the number of sessions. A 2-month-old eating 24 ounces a day and a parent pumping 8 times would need about 3 ounces per session on average. Some sessions will be above that, some below. Looking at your 24-hour total is more useful than fixating on any single session.

If you’re pumping at work while your baby nurses at home, you’re only replacing the missed feedings. Two or three pumping sessions producing 3 to 4 ounces each often covers what a baby takes from bottles during a typical workday.

How Long and How Often to Pump

Plan for about 20 minutes of actual pumping per session. With setup and cleanup, each session realistically takes 30 to 40 minutes. Pumping beyond 20 minutes when milk has stopped flowing doesn’t usually yield significantly more and can cause soreness.

In the early weeks, pumping 8 to 12 times in 24 hours mimics a newborn’s nursing pattern and helps establish supply. By the time your baby is 3 to 4 months old, many people can maintain production with 6 to 8 sessions. Dropping sessions too quickly can reduce overall output, so it’s better to cut back gradually and monitor your daily totals.

Why Your Output Might Be Lower Than Expected

The pump itself matters more than most people realize. One of the most common and fixable issues is flange size, the funnel-shaped piece that fits over your nipple. A pilot study comparing individualized flange fitting to standard sizing found that people using a properly fitted (often smaller) flange pumped significantly more milk and reported greater comfort. If pumping is painful or your nipple is being pulled too far into the tunnel, your flanges are likely the wrong size. Many people default to the flange that comes in the box without realizing it’s too large.

Other factors that reduce output include dehydration, high stress, infrequent pumping, and pump suction set too low (or too high, which can cause tissue swelling that actually blocks milk flow). A pump that’s several years old or heavily used may also lose suction strength over time.

Power Pumping to Increase Supply

Power pumping mimics a baby’s cluster feeding to signal your body to produce more. The standard protocol fits into one hour:

  • Pump 20 minutes
  • Rest 10 minutes
  • Pump 10 minutes
  • Rest 10 minutes
  • Pump 10 minutes

You replace one of your regular daily sessions with this pattern, typically for 3 to 7 days in a row. Most people don’t see a volume increase during the power pumping sessions themselves. The payoff shows up in your regular sessions a few days later. Power pumping works best when supply is genuinely low, not when output is normal but feels disappointing compared to social media freezer stashes.

How Much You Actually Need to Store

It’s easy to feel like you should be building a massive freezer supply, but for most situations you only need enough to cover the feedings you’ll miss. If you’re returning to work, having a buffer of 2 to 3 days’ worth of bottles (roughly 50 to 75 ounces) before your start date gives you a comfortable cushion. After that, today’s pumped milk becomes tomorrow’s bottles, and you stay roughly in balance.

Pumping “just enough” is actually a sign that your supply is well-matched to your baby’s needs. Significant oversupply comes with its own set of problems, including increased risk of clogged ducts and discomfort. If you’re consistently producing what your baby eats in a day, your body is doing exactly what it should.
