That range is enough to support muscle repair and recovery, and going above 40 grams in a single post-workout serving doesn’t appear to provide additional muscle-building benefit for most younger adults. What does matter is hitting your daily target and spreading it reasonably across meals.

Your post-workout protein source should ideally contain 700 to 3,000 milligrams of leucine per serving to hit the threshold that kicks muscle repair into high gear.
That said, plant-based protein powders perform just as well as whey for muscle growth when they contain comparable amounts of protein and leucine per serving. The key is total protein and amino acid content, not whether it comes from dairy or peas. Whole food sources, like chicken, eggs, Greek yogurt, tofu, or legumes, work just fine too. A post-workout meal doesn’t need to be a shake.
