Most healthy adults need about 90 minutes of REM sleep per night, which works out to roughly 25% of a seven-to-nine-hour sleep period. That percentage shifts across your lifespan, and several everyday habits can quietly chip away at the REM sleep you’re actually getting.
How Much REM Sleep Adults Need
REM sleep accounts for about 25% of total sleep time in adults. If you’re sleeping the recommended seven to nine hours, that translates to roughly 1.75 to 2.25 hours of REM per night. You don’t get all of that in one block. Instead, REM comes in waves across four to six sleep cycles, each lasting about 80 to 100 minutes. Your earliest REM periods are short, sometimes just a few minutes, while the longest stretches happen in the final cycles of the night, closer to when you wake up.
This back-loaded pattern is why cutting your sleep short by even an hour disproportionately costs you REM time. If you set an alarm that shaves off the last cycle of the night, you’re losing the richest REM period of the entire sleep session.
REM Sleep Needs Change With Age
Newborns spend up to 50% of their sleep in REM, which may reflect how much rapid brain development is happening in those early months. As children grow into toddlers and school age, that share drops to about 20% to 25% of total sleep, a range that holds fairly steady through adolescence. Teenagers need eight to ten hours of sleep per night, with that same 20% to 25% going to REM.
Older adults see a further decline. Many people over 65 spend only 15% to 20% of their sleep in REM. Some of that reduction is a normal part of aging, but it can also be amplified by medications, fragmented sleep, or underlying health conditions. Less REM sleep in older adults has been linked to sharper declines in memory and cognitive function, which makes protecting sleep quality especially important later in life.
What REM Sleep Does for Your Brain
REM sleep is when your brain does some of its most important behind-the-scenes work. It plays a direct role in consolidating memories, particularly procedural memories (the “how to” kind, like riding a bike or playing an instrument) and emotionally significant experiences. Research using brain-activity recordings has confirmed that neural activity during REM is specifically required for spatial and contextual memory consolidation. In plain terms, your brain is replaying and filing away what you learned and experienced during the day.
REM sleep also helps regulate your emotions. During REM, your brain reprocesses emotionally charged events in a lower-stress chemical environment, which is part of why a bad day can genuinely feel more manageable after a full night of sleep. People who consistently get less REM sleep tend to report more irritability, difficulty concentrating, and trouble with creative problem-solving.
Alcohol and REM Sleep
Alcohol is one of the most common and underestimated disruptors of REM sleep. When you drink before bed, your sleep becomes fragmented. Your brain briefly wakes up and interrupts your sleep cycle repeatedly throughout the night. Each of those micro-awakenings can reset you back into lighter sleep stages, cutting down on the REM time you accumulate. Even moderate drinking, a glass or two in the evening, is enough to measurably reduce REM sleep.
The effect is especially pronounced in the second half of the night, right when your longest and most restorative REM periods would normally occur. This is why people who drink before bed often wake up feeling unrested even if they technically slept for seven or eight hours. The total time asleep looked fine on paper, but the composition of that sleep was off.
Bedroom Temperature Matters More Than You Think
Your sleeping environment has a surprisingly direct effect on how much REM sleep you get. Heat, in particular, is a major REM disruptor. Research has shown that exposure to too much heat or cold during sleep increases wakefulness and decreases REM sleep specifically.
The ideal bedroom temperature for protecting REM sleep falls between 60 and 67°F (15 to 19°C). This range helps stabilize REM periods so your brain can stay in that stage long enough to do its work. Once the room climbs above 70°F, sleep quality starts to suffer. Below 60°F, cold exposure can also fragment your sleep. Keeping your room cool, dark, and quiet gives your body the best conditions to cycle through all its sleep stages fully, with REM getting the time it needs in those crucial later cycles.
Signs You’re Not Getting Enough REM Sleep
Because REM sleep supports memory, emotional processing, and cognitive sharpness, a deficit tends to show up in predictable ways. You might notice that you’re more forgetful than usual, especially with things you recently learned. Emotional reactions can feel harder to manage: small frustrations hit harder, and your mood may swing more easily. Concentration suffers, and tasks that require creative thinking or flexible problem-solving feel more effortful.
You can’t directly measure your REM sleep at home with perfect accuracy, though some wearable sleep trackers provide rough estimates. The most reliable indicator is how you feel during the day. If you’re sleeping a full seven to nine hours and still feel mentally foggy or emotionally reactive, the quality of your sleep, including your REM share, is worth examining. Common culprits include alcohol, an overheated bedroom, irregular sleep schedules, and stimulants like caffeine consumed too late in the day. Fixing even one of those factors can meaningfully shift how much REM sleep you’re getting each night.
