How Much REM Sleep Should You Get Per Night?

Most healthy adults spend about 25% of their total sleep time in REM, which works out to roughly 90 to 120 minutes per night if you’re sleeping seven to eight hours. That percentage is the benchmark sleep specialists use, though the actual minutes vary depending on how long you sleep and how smoothly you cycle through each stage.

What 25% Actually Looks Like

Sleep isn’t one continuous state. Your brain cycles through lighter sleep, deep sleep, and REM in roughly 90-minute rounds throughout the night. You typically enter your first REM period about 70 to 100 minutes after falling asleep, and that initial episode is short, often just a few minutes. Each subsequent REM period gets longer, with the most substantial stretches happening in the final third of the night. This back-loading matters: if you cut your sleep short by even an hour, you’re disproportionately losing REM time, not just total sleep.

For someone sleeping seven hours, 25% means about 105 minutes of REM. For someone sleeping six hours, it drops to around 90 minutes, and some of those later, longer REM cycles never happen at all. This is one reason why consistently short sleep does more than make you tired. It selectively starves your brain of the sleep stage most involved in emotional processing and memory.

Why REM Sleep Matters for Your Brain

REM sleep is when your brain does its most intensive emotional housekeeping. During this stage, the brain regions responsible for emotion, memory, and reward are more active than they are during waking hours or other sleep stages. This heightened activity serves a purpose: your brain is replaying and reprocessing emotionally significant experiences from the day, stripping away some of their raw intensity and filing away what’s useful.

One of the more interesting things that happens during REM is a drop in stress-related brain chemicals. This neurochemical shift appears to be essential for emotional regulation. It’s why a negative experience from the day often feels less charged after a full night’s sleep. Research has shown that when people incorporate waking experiences into their dreams, those experiences are recalled with less emotional intensity afterward, supporting the idea that REM sleep actively dampens the emotional weight of difficult memories.

When researchers selectively deprive people of REM sleep, the consolidation of emotional memories suffers. People become worse at retaining emotionally relevant information while neutral memories are relatively unaffected. REM deprivation also appears to compromise the brain’s fear extinction process, the mechanism that helps you stop reacting to threats that are no longer relevant. This has implications for anxiety, PTSD, and general stress resilience.

What Happens When You Don’t Get Enough

The cognitive effects of poor sleep are well documented, and REM loss contributes significantly. Sleep deprivation produces psychomotor impairments equivalent to a blood alcohol level at or above the legal limit. After 28 hours without sleep, reaction time and accuracy drop to levels comparable to intoxication. But you don’t need to pull an all-nighter to feel the effects. Once continuous waking exceeds 16 hours, performance deficits start climbing toward that same impairment range.

Executive function takes a particular hit. Decision-making skills that depend on flexible thinking deteriorate: the ability to absorb changing information, update strategies, assess risk, and maintain insight into your own performance. People who are sleep-deprived tend to perseverate on ineffective approaches and take inappropriate risks, often without recognizing they’re doing so.

Mood changes are arguably the most noticeable consequence. Meta-analyses suggest that the emotional effects of sleep loss, including fatigue, confusion, and loss of motivation, are actually larger than the cognitive or motor effects. Irritability, anxiety, and a general flattening of positive emotions are common when REM sleep is consistently disrupted.

Common Reasons REM Sleep Gets Cut Short

Alcohol is one of the most widespread REM disruptors. Even moderate drinking delays the onset of the first REM period and reduces total REM time across the night. You may fall asleep faster, but the architecture of your sleep is fundamentally altered. Caffeine and nicotine, particularly when consumed in the afternoon or evening, can also interfere with normal progression through sleep stages.

Obstructive sleep apnea poses a more serious and often unrecognized threat to REM sleep. Research from UC Irvine found that oxygen drops during REM sleep were linked to white matter changes in brain regions critical for memory, even in older adults who had no cognitive impairment. Notably, the severity of oxygen loss during REM mattered more than the total number of breathing interruptions. People with technically “mild” sleep apnea scores still experienced significant oxygen drops during REM that correlated with brain changes. Standard clinical measures of sleep apnea may underestimate the real physiological damage happening during this stage.

Certain medications, particularly antidepressants, can reduce or nearly eliminate REM sleep. SSRIs and SNRIs are known to suppress REM, and the effect becomes more pronounced when these medications are combined. If you’re on an antidepressant and experiencing symptoms that suggest poor sleep quality (persistent fatigue, emotional blunting, difficulty with memory), the medication’s effect on REM sleep may be a contributing factor worth discussing with your prescriber.

How to Protect and Increase Your REM Sleep

The single most effective thing you can do is sleep long enough. Because REM periods grow longer as the night progresses, the difference between six and eight hours of sleep is heavily weighted toward REM. Simply extending your sleep by 30 to 60 minutes can meaningfully increase the proportion of time spent in REM.

Consistency matters nearly as much as duration. REM sleep tends to align with the natural dip in body temperature that occurs in the early morning hours, a rhythm governed by your circadian clock. Irregular sleep and wake times confuse this internal timing and can interfere with REM regulation. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, including weekends, helps keep your REM cycles on track.

Cutting back on alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine in the hours before bed makes a measurable difference. For alcohol specifically, even a single drink within a few hours of bedtime can shift your sleep architecture away from REM. The closer to bedtime you drink, the larger the effect.

If a sleep disorder is the underlying problem, treating it can produce a rapid improvement. Studies have found that people treated for obstructive sleep apnea with CPAP therapy experience what’s called REM rebound: a temporary surge in REM sleep as the brain catches up on what it’s been missing. This rebound is accompanied by improved mood and overall sleep quality.

General sleep hygiene practices also support healthy sleep staging: regular exercise, a cool and dark bedroom, a consistent wind-down routine before bed, and keeping screens out of the bedroom. If you find yourself lying awake for more than 20 minutes, getting up and doing something low-stimulation in another room until you feel sleepy again is more effective than staying in bed and waiting.
