How Much Sleep Do 11-Year-Olds Need Each Night?

An 11-year-old needs 9 to 12 hours of sleep every 24 hours, according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. That’s a wide range, and where your child falls within it depends on their individual biology, activity level, and whether puberty has started. About one in three children ages 6 to 14 aren’t hitting that minimum of nine hours.

Why the Range Is So Wide

Some 11-year-olds genuinely function well on nine hours. Others are groggy and irritable without a full eleven or twelve. The difference often comes down to growth demands and physical activity. A child in a growth spurt or playing competitive sports will generally need more sleep than one in a quieter developmental phase. The only reliable way to figure out your child’s sweet spot is to observe how they behave and feel on different amounts of sleep, ideally during a stretch without alarm clocks, like a school break.

What Happens During Sleep at This Age

Sleep isn’t downtime for an 11-year-old’s body. Growth hormone is released during the first stretch of deep sleep each night, typically within the first couple of hours after falling asleep. This makes that early portion of the night especially important for physical development.

Sleep also plays a direct role in how well children learn, remember, and manage their emotions. The brain processes and consolidates the day’s learning during sleep cycles, which is why a well-rested child retains information from school more effectively than one running on too few hours.

The Puberty Shift Starting Around Age 11

Many 11-year-olds are entering or approaching puberty, and this triggers a real biological change in sleep patterns. Puberty delays the body’s natural release of melatonin (the hormone that signals sleepiness) by one to three hours. The result: your child genuinely isn’t tired at their old bedtime, and mornings feel brutal.

The American Academy of Pediatrics compares this to living in a different time zone. Your child isn’t being defiant when they say they can’t fall asleep at 8:30 anymore. Their internal clock has literally shifted. This doesn’t mean they need less sleep. It means the window for getting that sleep has moved later, which creates a real conflict with early school start times. An 11-year-old whose melatonin doesn’t kick in until 10 PM but has to wake at 6:30 AM is only getting eight and a half hours, well short of the minimum nine.

Building a Realistic Bedtime

Work backward from your child’s wake-up time. If they need to be up at 6:30 AM for school and need 10 hours of sleep, they should be asleep by 8:30 PM, which means lights out and devices away well before that. If they need closer to nine hours, a 9:30 PM sleep time works.

Keep in mind that “bedtime” and “asleep” are not the same thing. Most children take 15 to 20 minutes to fall asleep, so factor that in. A child who gets into bed at 9:00 and falls asleep at 9:20 with a 6:30 alarm is getting about nine hours, which sits at the low end of the recommendation. If they seem to need more, the bedtime needs to move earlier.

Consistency matters more than perfection. Going to bed and waking up at roughly the same times every day, including weekends, keeps the body’s internal clock calibrated. Sleeping in two extra hours on Saturday morning feels good in the moment but makes Sunday night harder.

Screens and Sleep Don’t Mix Well

Children’s eyes are physically more sensitive to light than adult eyes. Their pupils are larger and their lenses more transparent, allowing more light to reach the back of the eye. One study found that a 9-year-old’s eyes transmit 1.2 times more blue light than an adult’s. This matters because light exposure in the evening suppresses melatonin production, and in children, the effect is dramatic. Research from the University of Colorado found that even dim light (well below typical room lighting) suppressed melatonin by an average of 78% in children. At higher intensities, suppression reached 70% to 99%, and melatonin didn’t bounce back in most children even 50 minutes after the light was turned off.

The practical takeaway: screens should go off at least one hour before bed. This includes phones, tablets, TVs, and gaming devices. Dimming household lights in the hour before bed also helps signal the brain that nighttime is approaching.

Signs Your Child Isn’t Getting Enough Sleep

Sleep deprivation in 11-year-olds doesn’t always look like tiredness. It often shows up as behavior problems that can be mistaken for attitude issues or even attention disorders. Children who are short on sleep tend to see the world more negatively and have bigger emotional reactions to minor frustrations. A small setback that a well-rested child shrugs off can trigger tears or anger in a sleep-deprived one.

Other signs to watch for:

  • Trouble focusing on homework or classroom tasks, especially in the afternoon
  • Impulsive behavior, acting before thinking through consequences
  • Hyperactivity that seems contradictory to being tired but is actually a common response to sleep debt in children
  • Increased anxiety or withdrawal from activities they normally enjoy
  • Morning battles, extreme difficulty waking up or persistent grogginess

If your child is sleeping nine hours but consistently showing these signs, they likely need closer to ten or eleven. Some children at this age still genuinely need the upper end of the range, and that’s normal.

Caffeine Can Quietly Sabotage Sleep

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children avoid caffeine entirely. That said, many 11-year-olds consume it without their parents realizing it, through iced tea, soda, chocolate, and especially energy drinks. Caffeine has a half-life of about five to six hours, meaning half the caffeine from a soda at 3 PM is still circulating at 8 or 9 PM. Even if your child falls asleep on schedule, caffeine reduces the quality of deep sleep, which is exactly the stage that matters most for growth and memory consolidation. Cutting caffeine after noon, or better yet eliminating it, is one of the simplest changes that can improve sleep quality.
