Most 10-year-olds do well with about 10 hours, which means a child who needs to wake at 7 a.m. should be asleep by 9 p.m. at the latest.

Consistency on weekends is just as important as the weekday routine. The CDC recommends keeping bedtimes and wake times the same every day of the week. Letting a child sleep until noon on Saturday feels generous, but it resets their internal clock and makes Monday morning brutally difficult. If your child needs to catch up on sleep, limiting the weekend sleep-in to 30 or 45 extra minutes keeps the clock from drifting too far.
Working Backward From Wake-Up Time
The simplest way to figure out your child’s ideal bedtime is to start with when they need to be awake and count backward 10 to 11 hours. That extra hour accounts for the time it takes to actually fall asleep after lights go out, which is typically 15 to 20 minutes for a child with a good routine. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

If your child consistently wakes up on their own before the alarm, seems alert within 15 minutes of getting up, and holds steady energy through the afternoon, they’re likely getting enough. If mornings are a battle and the afternoon brings crashes or meltdowns, the simplest fix is moving bedtime earlier by 15-minute increments until things improve.
