An 8-year-old who wakes up easily, stays focused at school, and isn’t melting down by dinnertime is probably getting enough, even if they land on the lower end. A child who consistently needs to be dragged out of bed or crashes on the couch after school may need to shift closer to 11 or 12 hours. How Screens Affect Your Child’s Sleep
Light exposure in the hour before bed suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals the brain it’s time to sleep. Children are especially sensitive to this effect. Letting kids sleep in on weekends feels like a gift, but large shifts between weekday and weekend schedules create what researchers call social jetlag. It’s measured as the gap between the midpoint of sleep on school nights versus weekend nights. If your child sleeps from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays but 11 p.m. to 9 a.m. on weekends, that’s two hours of social jetlag, essentially the same biological disruption as crossing two time zones every weekend and flying back every Monday.
A birth cohort study tracking children from preschool into school age found that social jetlag of one hour or more was linked to increased risk of myopia and measurable changes in eye growth. Children with consistently irregular sleep patterns were roughly 55% more likely to develop markers associated with nearsightedness. If your child needs to wake up at 6:30 a.m. for school and functions best on 10.5 hours of sleep, count backward: lights out at 8:00 p.m., with the 30-minute routine starting at 7:30. If they need closer to 9 hours, an 8:30 or 9:00 bedtime may be enough. The simplest way to find the sweet spot is to hold bedtime steady for two weeks and observe. A child getting the right amount of sleep will wake up relatively easily on their own, hold focus during school hours, and manage emotions without frequent breakdowns by late afternoon.
If your child consistently takes more than 20 minutes to fall asleep, the bedtime may be too early, and they’re lying in bed building a frustrating association between bed and wakefulness. If they’re asleep within five minutes of their head hitting the pillow, they’re likely overtired and could benefit from an earlier bedtime.
