How Much Sleep Should a 16-Month-Old Get?

A 16-month-old needs 11 to 14 hours of total sleep per day, including naps. Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Sleep Foundation recommend this range for all toddlers between ages 1 and 2. Most 16-month-olds split that total between 10 to 12 hours of nighttime sleep and one or two daytime naps.

How Daytime Naps Fit In

At 16 months, your toddler is right in the middle of one of the biggest nap transitions: dropping from two naps down to one. Some 16-month-olds are still happily taking two shorter naps, while others have already consolidated into a single longer midday nap. Neither pattern is wrong as long as the total sleep for the day lands in that 11-to-14-hour window.

If your toddler is still on two naps, each one is typically 45 minutes to an hour and a half. On a one-nap schedule, that single nap often stretches to two and a half or even three hours, especially in the early weeks after the transition. The nap usually falls around midday, starting sometime between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Signs It’s Time to Drop a Nap

Not every 16-month-old is ready to switch to one nap. Look for these patterns showing up consistently over a week or two, not just the occasional off day:

  • Fighting the morning nap or just playing quietly in the crib without falling asleep
  • Morning naps shrinking to 30 minutes or less
  • Refusing the second nap three or more days out of five
  • Nap timing sliding later, with the first nap pushing past 10:30 a.m. or the second nap starting after 3:30 p.m.

If only one of these is happening, your toddler may just need a schedule adjustment rather than a full transition. When several show up together, it’s usually time to consolidate.

Sample Schedules for a 16-Month-Old

The spacing between sleep periods matters as much as the total hours. Sleep consultants call these gaps “wake windows.” For a 16-month-old on two naps, wake windows run about 3 to 4 hours. On one nap, they stretch to 4 to 6 hours.

A two-nap day might look like this: wake at 6:30 a.m., first nap around 9:45 to 10:45 a.m., second nap around 2:15 to 3:50 p.m., bedtime at 7:50 p.m. A one-nap day shifts to something like: wake at 6:45 a.m., nap from noon to 2:45 p.m., bedtime at 7:00 p.m. Bedtime for a 16-month-old generally falls between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.

During the transition period, you might alternate between one-nap and two-nap days depending on how your toddler slept the night before. That’s completely normal and can last a few weeks before the single-nap schedule settles in.

The 16-Month Sleep Regression

If your toddler was sleeping well and suddenly isn’t, you’re likely dealing with a sleep regression. The regression commonly associated with 18 months actually shows up anywhere between 14 and 19 months, so 16 months is a prime window for it. Several developmental changes collide at once to disrupt sleep.

Separation anxiety peaks between 15 and 18 months and affects nearly all toddlers to some degree. Your child may suddenly protest bedtime, wake crying in the middle of the night, or refuse to nap without you in the room. At the same time, a language explosion is happening. Your toddler’s brain is processing new words constantly, sometimes even practicing sounds in the crib instead of sleeping. New physical skills like confident walking and climbing add excitement and a sense of independence that makes settling down harder.

This regression typically lasts two to six weeks. Keeping the sleep schedule as consistent as possible helps your toddler move through it faster, even when individual nights feel chaotic.

Why Sleep Matters So Much at This Age

Sleep at 16 months isn’t just about rest. Your toddler’s brain is doing critical work while unconscious: repairing the wear of normal daily function and reorganizing the connections between brain cells to lock in learning and memory.

During REM sleep, when the brain is most active, it strengthens the neural pathways that support what your child experienced during the day, whether that’s new words, walking on uneven ground, or understanding cause and effect. At the same time, it prunes away connections the brain doesn’t need. Research from the American Association for the Advancement of Science describes how this process shapes everything from language to motor skills. A baby hearing English, for example, will have their sleeping brain reinforce the connections for English sounds while pruning those for other languages. This same mechanism is how toddlers consolidate physical skills and early problem-solving.

Growth hormone also surges during deep sleep, making consistent, sufficient sleep essential for physical development during this rapid-growth period.

Signs Your Toddler Isn’t Getting Enough Sleep

Toddlers can’t tell you they’re overtired, but their behavior makes it clear. The obvious signs include rubbing their eyes, yawning, and droopy eyelids. But undertired and overtired look very different, and the overtired version is often harder to recognize because it can mimic hyperactivity.

When a toddler misses their sleep window, their body releases a surge of cortisol and adrenaline. Instead of winding down, they ramp up, becoming wired, clumsy, or almost manic. That stress hormone spike also makes them sweatier than usual. Other signs to watch for: turning away from food, toys, or interaction (a sign of sensory overload from fatigue), increased clinginess, and a prolonged whining sound that never quite becomes a full cry. If your toddler regularly falls apart in the late afternoon, has trouble settling at bedtime, or wakes frequently at night, their total sleep may be falling short of the 11-hour minimum.

Setting Up the Sleep Environment

A 16-month-old should still sleep in a crib with a firm, tight-fitting mattress and a fitted sheet only. Blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals are best kept out of the crib at this age. The room should be cool enough that your toddler needs only one more layer than you’d wear comfortably in the same space. Signs of overheating include sweating, flushed skin, or a hot chest, all of which can disrupt sleep quality even if your toddler doesn’t fully wake.

Darkness matters more at this age than it did in infancy. As toddlers become more aware of their environment, even small amounts of light can make it harder to fall asleep or cause early morning waking. Blackout curtains or shades make a noticeable difference, especially for that midday nap when the sun is at its brightest.
