In practice, most 18-year-olds fall short: more than two-thirds of high school students report getting 7 hours or less on a typical school night.
Why 18-Year-Olds Need More Than Other Adults
If you’re 18, you sit right on the boundary between two age categories. General adult guidelines say at least 7 hours, but teen guidelines say 8 to 10. The difference matters because at 18, your brain is still maturing. The frontal lobe, the part responsible for decision-making, impulse control, and abstract thinking, isn’t fully developed yet. Sleep is when your brain consolidates memories, processes new information, and does critical maintenance work on these still-developing systems.
Your biology also works against an early bedtime. The emotional toll is significant. Between 2010 and 2015, more than 1,300 drivers aged 25 and younger were involved in fatal drowsy driving crashes in the United States, accounting for over 30% of all drivers in such crashes. The National Transportation Safety Board highlighted a case involving an 18-year-old who lost control of a vehicle after having only a narrow window for sleep in the preceding 24 hours. The crash happened during a time of day when alertness naturally dips, and fatigue was determined to be the probable cause.
High school students sleeping 7 hours or fewer per night were also more likely to text while driving, drink and drive, and skip wearing a seat belt. Sleep deprivation doesn’t just slow your reaction time. It erodes the judgment that keeps you from risky behavior in the first place.
Signs You’re Not Sleeping Enough
Sleep deprivation doesn’t always feel like exhaustion. Sometimes it shows up as difficulty concentrating in class, especially during morning periods. Your mind drifts, you reread the same paragraph multiple times, and new material doesn’t stick. Irritability, mood swings, and a shorter emotional fuse are common. You might notice you’re more anxious than usual or quicker to feel overwhelmed by things that wouldn’t normally bother you.
Other signs include relying on caffeine to get through the day, falling asleep within minutes of lying down (which actually signals significant sleep debt, not “good sleeping”), dozing off during boring tasks, and feeling foggy or slow when making decisions. If weekends involve sleeping several hours longer than weeknights, that gap is a clear indicator your body is trying to recover from a deficit.
How to Actually Get 8 to 10 Hours
The night-owl shift in your biology is real, but it doesn’t mean sleep is out of your control. A few targeted habits can close the gap between what your body needs and what you’re actually getting.
Stop using screens one to two hours before bed. The light from phones, laptops, and tablets suppresses the signals your brain uses to prepare for sleep. If that feels unrealistic, start with 30 minutes and work up. Turn off notifications when you go to sleep and keep devices that emit light out of your bedroom entirely. Call a friend instead of texting, spend time with family, or try some simple breathing exercises in that wind-down window.
Keep your sleep schedule consistent, even on weekends. Sleeping in until noon on Saturday and then trying to fall asleep at 11 p.m. on Sunday is the equivalent of giving yourself jet lag every week. A one-hour difference between weeknight and weekend wake times is a reasonable target. Pair this with a fixed bedtime that gives you a full 8-hour window of sleep opportunity, meaning you’re in bed and lights are off, not just in your room.
Watch your caffeine timing. Coffee, energy drinks, and even some teas can linger in your system for 6 or more hours. A 4 p.m. energy drink is still active in your bloodstream at 10 p.m. If you rely on caffeine to stay alert, that itself is a signal you need more sleep, not more stimulants.
Physical activity during the day helps, but intense exercise within a couple of hours of bedtime can keep you wired. Morning or afternoon workouts tend to promote deeper sleep that night. A cool, dark, quiet room also makes a measurable difference. Even small changes, like a fan for white noise or blackout curtains, can improve how quickly you fall asleep and how long you stay asleep.
