Delta-8 THC products typically contain anywhere from 10 to 50 milligrams of delta-8 per serving in gummies, and the distillate used in vape cartridges ranges from about 79% to 94% pure delta-8 THC. But the question has layers, because delta-8 is itself a form of THC, and many products also contain measurable amounts of delta-9 THC, the compound most people simply call “THC.”
Delta-8 Is THC, With a Small Structural Twist
Delta-8 and delta-9 THC are nearly identical molecules. The difference comes down to the position of a single chemical bond: in delta-9, a double bond sits on the ninth carbon in the chain, while in delta-8, that bond shifts to the eighth carbon. That one-atom difference changes how the molecule interacts with your brain. Both forms bind to the same receptors in the nervous system (CB1 receptors), but delta-8 binds less efficiently. The result is a milder high, often described as roughly half to two-thirds the intensity of conventional delta-9 THC.
How Much Delta-8 Is in Common Products
Gummies are the most popular format, and they typically list 10, 25, or 50 milligrams of delta-8 THC per piece. Because delta-8 is less potent than delta-9, these doses are higher than what you’d see in a standard cannabis edible. Someone accustomed to a 10 mg delta-9 gummy might need 20 to 30 mg of delta-8 for a comparable effect, though individual tolerance varies widely.
Vape cartridges use delta-8 distillate, which lab analyses show ranges from about 79% to 94% purity. A standard 1 mL cartridge at 90% purity would contain roughly 900 mg of delta-8 THC total, dispensed in small puffs. Tinctures, flower sprayed with distillate, and concentrates round out the market, each with different concentration levels listed on the label.
Delta-9 THC Hiding in Delta-8 Products
Here’s where things get complicated. Delta-8 occurs naturally in cannabis, but only in trace amounts, far too little to extract at scale. Virtually all commercial delta-8 is manufactured by chemically converting CBD (from hemp) using acid catalysts. This reaction doesn’t produce pure delta-8. Lab analyses of acid-treated CBD samples found that the resulting mixtures contained up to 49% delta-9 THC alongside the delta-8, plus other THC-related compounds that aren’t listed on labels.
A study examining commercial delta-8 gummies found several problems: some products contained more delta-9 THC than declared, some overclaimed their delta-8 content, and many contained unlisted byproducts of the manufacturing process. So even though hemp-derived products are federally legal only when they contain no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight, the actual delta-9 content in a given delta-8 product may exceed that threshold.
Why the “Legal” Threshold Is Misleading
The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp and hemp derivatives containing no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. Delta-8 products exploit this rule: since the limit applies specifically to delta-9, a gummy loaded with delta-8 can technically comply while still producing a noticeable high. Several states have since moved to restrict or ban delta-8 sales, recognizing that the 0.3% rule wasn’t designed with synthesized cannabinoids in mind.
The federal limit also says nothing about the total amount of psychoactive material in a product. A package of gummies could contain hundreds of milligrams of delta-8 THC and still be “hemp-legal” as long as the delta-9 fraction stays below 0.3% by weight. For the consumer, the practical effect is that these products are intoxicating, sometimes significantly so, despite being sold in gas stations and online without age verification in many states.
What Purity Actually Looks Like
Because delta-8 is synthesized rather than extracted, purity depends entirely on the manufacturer’s process and quality control. High-resolution mass spectrometry testing of distillate samples has identified not just delta-8 and delta-9 THC but also several isomers, which are structural rearrangements created during the acid reaction. These byproducts haven’t been studied for safety in humans. Without consistent third-party testing, there’s no reliable way to know exactly what’s in a given product from the label alone.
If you’re buying delta-8 products, look for a certificate of analysis (COA) from an independent lab. A useful COA will list the delta-8 content per serving, any detectable delta-9 THC, residual solvents from manufacturing, and ideally a full cannabinoid profile that includes isomers and byproducts. Products without accessible lab results are a red flag, given how inconsistent the manufacturing process can be.
How the Effects Compare to Regular THC
Delta-8 binds to the same brain receptors as delta-9 but with weaker affinity. Most users report a calmer, less anxious version of a cannabis high, with less intense euphoria and fewer perceptual distortions. That said, at high enough doses, delta-8 can produce effects that feel very similar to delta-9, including impaired coordination and reaction time.
The onset and duration follow the same rules as any THC product. Vaping produces effects within minutes that taper over one to three hours. Edibles take 30 minutes to two hours to kick in and can last four to eight hours. Because delta-8 feels milder per milligram, some people take larger doses than they would with delta-9 and end up more intoxicated than expected, especially with edibles where the delay makes it easy to overdo it.
Delta-8 will also show up on a standard drug test. These tests detect THC metabolites, and your body breaks down delta-8 into metabolites that are structurally similar enough to trigger a positive result. There is no commercially available drug test that distinguishes between delta-8 and delta-9 use.
