Most experts consider 20 to 40 ng/mL a normal, healthy range. Some organizations and researchers push for a higher target of 30 to 50 ng/mL, particularly for bone health and immune function. Below 20 ng/mL is generally considered deficient.

If a blood test shows you’re deficient, your doctor may prescribe a loading dose of 50,000 IU once a week for eight weeks, as recommended by the Endocrine Society. This doesn’t mean 4,000 IU is dangerous, but rather that it’s the highest amount considered safe for long-term daily use without medical supervision. Going significantly above the upper limit for extended periods can cause your body to absorb too much calcium from food, a condition called hypercalcemia.
