There is no established upper limit for vitamin K intake. The Food and Nutrition Board at the National Institutes of Health specifically declined to set one, stating that “no adverse effects associated with vitamin K consumption from food or supplements have been reported in humans or animals.” Both major forms, K1 (found in leafy greens) and K2 (found in fermented foods and supplements), share this safety profile. That said, one important exception exists: if you take a blood thinner like warfarin, even small changes in vitamin K intake can cause real problems.
Why There’s No Upper Limit
Most vitamins and minerals have a tolerable upper intake level, a threshold above which negative effects start appearing. Vitamin K doesn’t. Researchers at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University put it plainly: “There is no known toxicity associated with high doses (dietary or supplemental) of the phylloquinone (vitamin K1) or menaquinone (vitamin K2) forms of vitamin K.” Allergic reactions are theoretically possible, as with any substance, but toxicity from overconsumption has never been documented in humans or animals.
This makes vitamin K unusual among fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamins A, D, and E can all accumulate in body fat and reach harmful levels. In Japan, a pharmaceutical form of vitamin K2 called MK-4 has been prescribed at 45 milligrams per day (45,000 micrograms) for osteoporosis treatment for decades. None of these studies identified a dose ceiling where harm begins.
The Warfarin Exception
The one group that genuinely needs to worry about vitamin K intake is people taking warfarin or similar blood thinners. Warfarin works by blocking your body’s ability to use vitamin K for clotting. When you suddenly increase your vitamin K intake, you effectively override the medication, making your blood clot more easily and raising the risk of a stroke or blood clot. When you suddenly decrease intake, the medication becomes more potent than intended, increasing the risk of dangerous bleeding.
The key issue isn’t the total amount of vitamin K you eat. It’s consistency. Large swings in intake are what destabilize your clotting levels (measured by a lab value called INR). People on warfarin who regularly eat vitamin K-rich foods can continue doing so, but adding a new supplement or drastically changing their diet can shift things quickly. Newer blood thinners like rivaroxaban and apixaban work through a different mechanism and are not affected by vitamin K intake.
K1 vs. K2: Any Safety Differences?
Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) comes primarily from green vegetables like kale, spinach, and broccoli. Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) comes from fermented foods like natto and certain cheeses, and is the form most commonly sold as a supplement. Both forms have the same clean safety record. Neither form causes abnormal clotting when taken in high amounts, which is a common concern people have. Your body’s clotting system has a natural ceiling; once the proteins involved are fully activated, extra vitamin K doesn’t push clotting further.
Vitamin K and Newborns
Babies are born with very little vitamin K in their systems, and they can’t get much through breast milk. This puts them at risk for a rare but serious condition called vitamin K deficiency bleeding, which can cause brain hemorrhage. The standard practice is a single injection of vitamin K shortly after birth. This is a deficiency concern, not a toxicity one. The adequate intake for vitamin K is 120 micrograms per day for adult men and 90 micrograms for adult women. Most people eating a varied diet meet this easily. A single cup of cooked spinach contains around 888 micrograms, nearly ten times the daily recommendation, and this causes no issues.
If you’re considering a K2 supplement for bone or cardiovascular health, doses in the 100 to 200 microgram range are typical and well within the amounts studied in clinical trials. Even doses several times higher have not produced adverse effects in research settings. The absence of an upper limit doesn’t mean you should take unlimited amounts, since there’s simply no evidence that megadoses offer extra benefit. But if you’re wondering whether your current intake is dangerous, the answer for most people is almost certainly no.
