In older adults (65 and up), both total body mass and water content decline further. You don’t need a lab test to get a rough sense of your hydration. Urine color is one of the simplest and most studied indicators. Research from the University of Kentucky found that urine color correlates meaningfully with more precise laboratory hydration markers, with correlation values ranging from moderate to strong depending on the study. Pale straw or light yellow generally signals adequate hydration. Dark yellow or amber suggests you’re behind on fluids.
Other practical signs of mild dehydration include a dry mouth, fatigue, and decreased concentration. Even modest fluid deficits, before you’d describe yourself as “thirsty,” can impair both physical performance and cognitive function. If you’re urinating infrequently or your urine is consistently dark, you’re likely not replacing what your body is losing throughout the day.
Does Body Water Percentage Matter for Health?
Your body water percentage isn’t something most people need to track as a number. It’s useful as a concept because it explains why hydration needs vary so much between individuals. A 200-pound muscular athlete has a larger water pool to maintain than a 120-pound sedentary adult, and their daily losses from sweat and metabolism are higher too.
Where body water percentage becomes clinically relevant is at the extremes. Very young children and older adults both operate with less physiological margin. Infants lose proportionally more water through their skin because of their high surface-area-to-weight ratio, despite starting at 75% water. Older adults start with less water on board and may not feel thirsty until they’re already meaningfully dehydrated.
