That includes water from all sources: plain water, other beverages, and food. About 80% of your daily fluid comes from drinks, while the remaining 20% comes from the food you eat.
What the 8 Glasses Rule Gets Wrong
The advice to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day (64 ounces total) is one of the most repeated health tips in existence, but no major health organization actually endorses it as a universal target. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends 92 to 124 ounces of total water daily for the average adult in a temperate climate, which is significantly more than 64 ounces. For some people, eight glasses is a perfectly reasonable amount. For others, especially larger or more active individuals, it falls well short.
A simpler formula that accounts for body size: take your weight in pounds and divide by two. That number, in ounces, is a reasonable daily fluid target. A 160-pound person would aim for about 80 ounces, while a 200-pound person would need closer to 100.
What Counts Toward Your Daily Total
Plain water is the most straightforward choice, but it’s not the only fluid that counts. Coffee, tea, juice, milk, and even sparkling water all contribute to your daily intake. Caffeine does have a mild diuretic effect, meaning it increases urine production, but research consistently shows that the fluid in caffeinated drinks more than offsets that effect at normal consumption levels. Your morning coffee is hydrating you, not dehydrating you. The exception is very high doses of caffeine taken all at once, especially if you’re not a regular caffeine drinker.
Food contributes more than most people realize. Fruits like watermelon and oranges, vegetables like cucumbers and lettuce, soups, and yogurt all have high water content. That 20% of daily fluid from food adds up to roughly 2 to 3 cups without any conscious effort.
When You Need More
Several situations push your fluid needs above baseline. Exercise is the most obvious one. During intense activity, the goal is to replace what you lose through sweat. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends drinking early and at regular intervals during exercise, aiming for roughly 600 to 1,200 milliliters (about 20 to 40 ounces) per hour depending on your sweat rate. A practical way to gauge this: weigh yourself before and after a workout. Each pound lost represents about 16 ounces of fluid you need to replace.
Hot, humid weather increases sweat losses even during routine activities like walking or yard work. There’s no single number for how much extra you need in the heat, but if you’re spending significant time outdoors in summer, you should be drinking noticeably more than your usual amount and not waiting until you feel thirsty.
High altitude also increases water loss. You lose more moisture through breathing in dry mountain air, and your body produces more urine in the first few days at elevation. If you’re hiking or skiing above 5,000 feet, plan to drink more than you would at sea level.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends 8 to 12 cups (64 to 96 ounces) of water per day during pregnancy. This supports the increased blood volume, amniotic fluid production, and overall metabolic demands of carrying a baby. Breastfeeding increases fluid needs further, since breast milk is roughly 87% water. Many lactating women find they need to add several extra cups per day on top of their usual intake to stay comfortable and well-hydrated.
Why Older Adults Face Higher Risk
As you age, the body’s thirst mechanism becomes less reliable. Research shows that thirst responses to dehydration, changes in blood volume, and shifts in blood concentration are all reduced in older adults. This means a 70-year-old can be significantly dehydrated without feeling particularly thirsty. The consequences are real: during heat waves, a disproportionate share of hospitalizations and deaths from heat-related illness occur in elderly populations, largely because of inadequate water intake.
If you’re over 65, or caring for someone who is, building a consistent drinking schedule rather than relying on thirst is important. Keeping a water bottle visible, drinking a glass with each meal and snack, and monitoring urine color are all more reliable strategies than waiting for the body to signal that it needs fluid.
How to Tell If You’re Drinking Enough
Your urine color is the simplest real-time indicator of hydration. Pale, light yellow urine that’s relatively odorless suggests you’re well-hydrated. Medium yellow means you should drink more soon. Dark yellow urine with a strong smell, especially in small amounts, signals that you’re dehydrated and need to catch up. One caveat: B vitamins, certain medications, and foods like beets can change urine color even when you’re perfectly hydrated, so look at the overall pattern rather than any single trip to the bathroom.
Other signs of mild dehydration include headache, fatigue, dry mouth, and difficulty concentrating. By the time you notice these symptoms, you’re already behind on fluid intake.
Can You Drink Too Much Water?
Yes, though it’s uncommon in everyday life. Your kidneys can process a remarkable amount of fluid. A person eating a normal diet can excrete 12 to 18 liters of water per day, which means your kidneys have enormous capacity to keep up with high intake. The danger arises when you drink large volumes very quickly, faster than your kidneys can clear the excess. This dilutes sodium levels in your blood, a condition called hyponatremia, which can cause confusion, seizures, and in severe cases, death.
The highest-risk scenario is endurance exercise, where athletes drink excessive water over several hours while also losing sodium through sweat. Marathon runners and long-distance hikers are more susceptible than most. For the average person going about their day, drinking too much water is far less likely than drinking too little. A general safety guideline is to avoid consuming more than about a liter (roughly 34 ounces) per hour over extended periods.
