Some generic versions of the same enzyme come in capsule form where one capsule equals one serving. The key point is matching the dose to each meal, not to your whole day. If you eat three meals that include beans, broccoli, or other trigger foods, you’d take a serving before each one.

Beano works by breaking down complex sugars found in certain plant foods before they reach the lower intestine, where bacteria would otherwise ferment them and produce gas. Because the enzyme acts on the specific food you’re eating, each dose is independent. A tablet taken at lunch doesn’t carry over to protect you at dinner.

Timing Matters More Than Frequency

The most important factor isn’t how many times a day you take it but when you take it relative to the meal. Beano needs to be in your stomach alongside the food it’s meant to break down. Your body lacks the enzyme to break these sugars down on its own, so they pass intact into the large intestine where gut bacteria feast on them and produce gas as a byproduct.

The enzyme in Beano (alpha-galactosidase) splits those complex sugars into simpler ones your small intestine can absorb before they ever reach the bacteria. This is why timing is so critical: the enzyme needs direct contact with the food.

Beano does not help with gas caused by dairy (that’s a lactase issue), carbonated drinks, or high-fiber foods like psyllium. If your gas comes from those sources, a different approach is needed.

There’s no evidence that taking Beano daily causes problems or that the enzyme loses effectiveness over time. It’s a digestive enzyme supplement, not a medication that builds tolerance. One Important Consideration for Diabetes

Because Beano breaks complex sugars into simpler ones that get absorbed earlier in digestion, it can raise blood sugar slightly more than if those sugars had passed through undigested. For most people this is negligible. But if you take a diabetes medication called acarbose, which works by slowing carbohydrate absorption, Beano can partially counteract that effect. Research published in Clinical Therapeutics found that patients taking both acarbose and Beano had higher post-meal blood sugar than those on acarbose alone, though levels were still significantly lower than without any treatment. If you use acarbose or a similar medication, this interaction is worth discussing with your doctor.

For people managing blood sugar through diet alone or with other medications, the small increase from Beano breaking down oligosaccharides is generally not clinically meaningful.
