How Often Do Men Jerk Off? What’s Normal by Age

Most men masturbate a few times per week, though the range varies widely depending on age, relationship status, and individual sex drive. In large surveys of men aged 18 to 59, about a quarter reported masturbating a few times per month to weekly, roughly 20% did so two to three times per week, and less than 20% reported more than four times a week. There is no single “normal” number.

Frequency by Age and Life Stage

Younger men tend to masturbate more often. Men in their late teens and twenties commonly report the highest frequencies, often several times a week. As men age, the numbers gradually decline. Older men are significantly more likely to report no masturbation at all over the previous year. Relationship status plays a role too: research published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that men who have frequent, satisfying partnered sex are less likely to masturbate often, suggesting that for many men, solo sex fills in for what partnered sex isn’t providing.

Population-level data from the British National Surveys of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles shows that masturbation has become slightly more common over time. Between the late 1990s and early 2010s, the percentage of men who reported masturbating in the past month rose from about 73% to 78%. Cultural attitudes, internet access, and shifting norms around sexuality likely contribute to that trend.

Hormonal Effects Are Temporary

A common concern is whether frequent masturbation lowers testosterone. It doesn’t in any meaningful long-term way. A small study in Fertility and Sterility measured blood hormone levels before, during, and after masturbation and found that testosterone spiked at the moment of ejaculation, then returned to its baseline within about 10 minutes. Your resting testosterone level stays the same regardless of how often you ejaculate.

Prolactin, a hormone linked to feelings of relaxation and satiety, roughly doubles after orgasm and stays elevated for a short period. That post-orgasm drowsiness you might feel is largely prolactin at work. Your body also releases dopamine and oxytocin during orgasm, both of which temporarily improve mood and counteract cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone.

The Link to Prostate Health

One of the more striking findings in men’s health research comes from a large Harvard study tracking tens of thousands of men over nearly two decades. Men who ejaculated 21 or more times per month had a 31% lower risk of prostate cancer compared to men who ejaculated four to seven times per month. A related analysis found that men averaging roughly five to seven ejaculations per week were 36% less likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 70 than men who ejaculated fewer than two to three times per week.

These are observational findings, so they don’t prove ejaculation directly prevents cancer. But the association is strong enough and consistent enough across studies that researchers take it seriously. The leading theory is that frequent ejaculation helps flush out potentially harmful substances from the prostate gland before they can cause cellular damage.

When Technique Causes Problems

Frequency alone rarely causes physical issues, but technique can. Gripping too tightly or always using the same motion can gradually desensitize the nerves in the penis, making it harder to reach orgasm during partnered sex or with a lighter touch. This pattern is sometimes called “death grip,” and it develops slowly as the body adapts to needing more and more pressure to feel stimulation.

Recovery is straightforward. The standard approach starts with about a week of no sexual stimulation at all, followed by roughly three weeks of reintroducing touch with gentler, more varied strokes. Most men notice their sensitivity returning within that window. If things still feel off after a month, giving it a bit more time typically resolves it without any medical intervention.

A less common but more significant issue involves masturbating face-down (prone) by pressing against a mattress or pillow. Done repeatedly over months or years, this position can overwork the pelvic floor muscles, leading to poor coordination in the muscles that control bladder and bowel function. Symptoms can include a constant urge to urinate, difficulty passing stool, or a feeling of incomplete evacuation. Switching to a conventional position is the first step, and pelvic floor rehabilitation can help if symptoms have already developed.

Masturbation and Sleep

Many men report that masturbating before bed helps them fall asleep faster, and the hormonal profile after orgasm supports that idea: prolactin rises, mood-regulating chemicals flood the brain, and the body shifts into a relaxed state. However, when researchers tracked this in a diary study, they found that orgasm from partnered sex significantly improved both how quickly people fell asleep and how well they slept, while masturbation with orgasm did not show the same measurable effect on sleep quality. The subjective sense of relaxation is real, but it may not translate into objectively better sleep the way sex with a partner does.

Where Frequency Becomes a Concern

There is no specific number of times per week or month that qualifies as “too much.” The line isn’t about frequency but about control and consequences. The World Health Organization recognizes compulsive sexual behavior as a diagnosable condition when someone repeatedly fails to control sexual urges over a period of six months or more, and that pattern causes significant distress or impairment in their personal life, relationships, work, or daily functioning.

The key distinction: feeling guilty about masturbation because of moral or religious beliefs does not, on its own, meet the threshold for a clinical problem. The diagnosis requires actual functional impairment, like missing work, damaging relationships, or being unable to stop despite wanting to. If masturbation fits comfortably into your life and isn’t causing distress or interfering with things you care about, the frequency is almost certainly fine.
