Age Restrictions

Alcohol and Drug Interactions
Avoid alcohol while taking this product. The combination of alcohol and acetaminophen puts stress on your liver, and the antihistamine in the formula already causes drowsiness that alcohol will intensify.
The more common risk is accidentally doubling up on ingredients. The cough suppressant, decongestant, and pain reliever in Alka-Seltzer Plus are the same active ingredients found in dozens of other over-the-counter cold and flu products. If you’re taking anything else for your symptoms, compare the ingredient lists carefully. Taking two products with overlapping ingredients can raise your blood pressure, increase your heart rate, or push you past safe acetaminophen limits.
If you take any type of antidepressant classified as an MAO inhibitor, this product is not safe to use. That interaction is potentially serious, and MAO inhibitors need to be stopped at least two weeks before using a product like this.
Side Effects to Expect
The most common side effect is drowsiness, thanks to the antihistamine. You may also notice dry mouth, mild dizziness, or slight nausea. These are generally mild and go away between doses. The decongestant component can cause a jittery feeling or make it harder to fall asleep if you take a dose too close to bedtime (with the daytime formula). If you experience a racing heartbeat, difficulty urinating, or confusion, stop taking the product.
