Valves and Membranes: The Parts That Wear Out Fastest
Valves and membranes are small silicone pieces that open and close with every pump cycle, creating the seal that generates suction. Because they flex thousands of times per session, they stretch and weaken faster than any other part. If you pump four or more times a day, replace these every two to four weeks. If you pump less frequently, every two months is reasonable.
The tricky part is that worn valves can look perfectly fine while no longer forming a tight seal. A good visual test for duckbill valves: check whether the slit at the tip stays closed when the pump is off. On a new valve, the edges of the slit touch completely. As the valve wears, that slit stays open even at rest. If you can see a visible gap, it’s time for a new one. Other signs include silicone that looks thin, stretched, or torn.
Backflow Protectors
