Opalescence Go prefilled whitening trays are designed to be used once a day for 5 to 10 days, depending on your desired shade. The exact wear time per session depends on which concentration you’re using: the 10% hydrogen peroxide trays are worn for 30 to 60 minutes, while the 15% trays need only 15 to 20 minutes.
Daily Wear Time by Concentration
The two concentrations of Opalescence Go have different session lengths. The 10% hydrogen peroxide formula calls for 30 to 60 minutes of wear each day. The 15% formula is stronger, so you only need 15 to 20 minutes per session. In both cases, you use one tray per day and wait at least 24 hours before your next session.
If you’re unsure which to choose, the tradeoff is straightforward: the 10% version is gentler but requires a longer daily commitment, while the 15% version gets you in and out faster but carries a slightly higher chance of sensitivity.
How Many Days to Complete a Course
A full whitening course runs 5 to 10 consecutive days. Most people start seeing results within the first few sessions, but the full range gives you flexibility to stop once you’re happy with the shade or to continue if you want more brightness. You don’t have to commit to all 10 days upfront. If your teeth reach the shade you want after 5 or 6 days, you can stop there and save any remaining trays for a future touch-up.
If you don’t experience any gum or tooth sensitivity, daily use is fine until you hit your target shade. There’s no benefit to wearing the trays longer than the recommended time per session or using them more than once a day.
What to Do If Your Teeth Get Sensitive
Some degree of sensitivity is common with any peroxide-based whitening product, and Opalescence Go is no exception. If your teeth or gums start to feel tender, you have two levers to pull: reduce the frequency or shorten the session time.
The simplest adjustment is switching from daily use to every other day. This gives your enamel a recovery window between sessions without abandoning the treatment. You can also cut your wear time within each session. For the 10% trays, that might mean wearing them for 30 minutes instead of 60. For the 15% trays, sticking to the shorter end of the 15 to 20 minute range can help. If sensitivity is significant, you can combine both strategies, using shorter sessions every other day, until things calm down. The course will take longer to finish, but the results will be comparable.
How Often to Do Touch-Ups
After completing your initial course, your results won’t last forever. Teeth gradually pick up stains from food, drinks, and normal daily exposure. Most people find that a touch-up every 6 to 12 months keeps their shade looking fresh. The exact interval depends on your habits. Heavy coffee or red wine drinkers will notice fading sooner than someone who mostly drinks water.
A touch-up doesn’t require repeating the full 5 to 10 day course. One to three sessions is typically enough to bring your shade back. This is where leftover trays from a previous course come in handy. Opalescence Go trays have a shelf life of 24 months when stored properly according to the packaging, so you can hold onto extras without worrying about them losing effectiveness.
Protecting Your Results Between Sessions
What you eat and drink in the first 48 hours after each whitening session matters more than you might expect. During that window, your teeth are especially porous and absorb pigments more easily than usual. Coffee, tea, red wine, cola, and brightly colored juices can undo some of the whitening you just achieved.
For those two days after each session, stick to what’s sometimes called a “white diet”: pale-colored foods and clear or white beverages like water and milk. This applies after every individual session during your course, not just after the final one. Beyond that initial 48 hours, normal eating and drinking is fine, though limiting staining foods in general will extend the life of your results and push your next touch-up further out.
