The mechanisms tie back to the gut-brain axis and inflammation. Diets high in processed foods promote systemic inflammation, which impairs neurotransmitter production and damages the gut lining. Nutrient-dense diets do the opposite: they feed beneficial gut bacteria, reduce inflammatory markers, and supply the raw materials your brain needs to produce serotonin, dopamine, and other mood-regulating chemicals. Deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids, B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc have all been linked to higher rates of depression.
