Implantation typically occurs about six to ten days after conception, with most embryos attaching to the uterine lining by day nine. The timing matters more than you might expect: embryos that implant earlier have significantly better odds of surviving the first trimester.
The Implantation Timeline, Day by Day
After a sperm fertilizes an egg in the fallopian tube, the resulting cell begins dividing as it travels toward the uterus. This journey takes several days. By around day five or six, the cluster of cells has become a blastocyst, a hollow ball with an inner group of cells that will become the embryo and an outer layer that will form the placenta.
Around day six after fertilization, the blastocyst reaches the uterus and begins the process of burrowing into the uterine lining. This isn’t instantaneous. The embryo first attaches to the surface, then gradually embeds itself deeper over the course of one to two days. Most implantations are complete between days six and ten, with the majority finishing by day nine.
Why Timing Affects Pregnancy Outcomes
The day an embryo implants has a surprisingly strong relationship with whether the pregnancy will continue. A landmark study from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences tracked this closely. Embryos that implanted by day nine after ovulation had only a 13 percent chance of early pregnancy loss. That risk nearly doubled to 26 percent if implantation happened on day ten, jumped to 52 percent on day eleven, and reached 82 percent for anything later.
This doesn’t mean a late-implanting embryo can’t result in a healthy pregnancy. It does mean the odds shift. The uterine lining has a limited window when it’s most receptive, and embryos that miss that peak window are more likely to attach in a less favorable spot or with weaker connections.
The Uterine Receptivity Window
Your uterus isn’t ready for an embryo at just any point in your cycle. After ovulation, rising progesterone levels transform the uterine lining into a thick, blood-rich environment capable of supporting an embryo. This receptive phase opens roughly five to six days after progesterone begins rising and stays open for a limited time.
The window is narrow enough that fertility clinics now use specialized testing to pinpoint it down to a six-hour range for individual patients. That level of precision matters in IVF, where doctors control when an embryo is transferred. In natural conception, your body handles the coordination on its own, but the same biological clock applies. Progesterone exposure needs to reach the right level for the right duration before the lining will accept an embryo, and once that window closes, it won’t reopen until the next cycle.
Signs That Implantation Has Happened
Some people notice light spotting around seven to ten days after ovulation. This implantation bleeding looks different from a period in several ways. The blood is typically brown, dark brown, or pink rather than the bright or dark red of menstrual blood. It’s light enough for a panty liner, lasting anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days, and any cramping is very mild compared to period cramps.
Not everyone experiences implantation bleeding. Estimates vary, but many people have no noticeable spotting at all. If you do see it, the timing can be confusing because it falls close to when you’d expect your period. The key differences are flow (spotting versus soaking a pad), color (brownish or pink versus red), and duration (brief versus three to seven days).
When a Pregnancy Test Can Detect It
Once the embryo implants, the outer layer of cells begins producing hCG, the hormone pregnancy tests detect. But hCG doesn’t appear in meaningful amounts right away. It builds gradually over days.
A blood test can pick up hCG as early as three to four days after implantation. That means, in the earliest possible scenario, a blood test could show a positive result around nine to ten days after conception. Most people aren’t getting blood tests that early, though.
Home urine tests need higher concentrations. Some highly sensitive tests can detect hCG six to eight days after implantation. Most standard home tests become reliable ten to twelve days after implantation, which lines up roughly with the first day of a missed period. Testing before that often produces false negatives simply because there isn’t enough hCG in your urine yet, even if implantation was successful.
If you get a negative result but your period still hasn’t arrived, waiting two to three days and testing again gives hCG levels time to rise into the detectable range. First-morning urine tends to have the highest concentration, making it the best time to test.
