Conception can happen within minutes of ovulation if sperm are already waiting in the fallopian tube, or anytime within the next 12 to 24 hours while the egg remains viable. The egg has a short lifespan once released, living for less than 24 hours. This is why the timing of intercourse relative to ovulation matters so much, and why the days before ovulation are actually more fertile than the day after.
Where and How Fertilization Happens
After an ovary releases an egg, it’s swept into the fallopian tube by tiny finger-like projections at the tube’s opening. The egg travels to a wider section of the tube called the ampulla, which is where fertilization most often takes place. If sperm are present, one will penetrate the egg’s outer membrane. That membrane then immediately changes its structure to block any other sperm from entering. From there, a series of cellular events produces a single-cell embryo called a zygote.
This process doesn’t take days. Once a sperm reaches the egg, fertilization itself is relatively fast. The real variable is whether sperm are already in position when the egg arrives.
Why Timing Before Ovulation Matters Most
Sperm can survive inside the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes for roughly 3 to 5 days. That means intercourse days before ovulation can still result in pregnancy, because sperm are already stationed in the fallopian tube by the time the egg is released. The egg, by contrast, only survives about 12 to 24 hours.
This mismatch creates a lopsided fertile window. Data from the British Fertility Society shows that the highest chance of pregnancy comes from intercourse in the three days before ovulation. Sex two days before ovulation carries about a 26% chance of conception per cycle. Sex one day after ovulation drops that to roughly 1%. By two days after, the window is effectively closed.
So while conception can technically happen within hours of ovulation, the odds are highest when sperm arrive first and wait for the egg, not the other way around.
From Fertilization to Implantation
Fertilization and pregnancy are not the same moment. After the egg is fertilized in the fallopian tube, the resulting embryo begins dividing as it slowly travels toward the uterus. It enters the uterus within 3 to 5 days. Around day 6 after fertilization, the embryo (now a ball of cells called a blastocyst) begins attaching to the uterine wall, usually near the top. This process, called implantation, is completed by day 9 or 10.
Implantation is the step that triggers your body to start producing hCG, the hormone pregnancy tests detect. Until the embryo implants, there’s no hormonal signal of pregnancy, even though fertilization may have already occurred days earlier. This lag is why you can’t test for pregnancy immediately after ovulation, even if conception happened right away.
When a Pregnancy Test Can Detect It
Because hCG production only begins at implantation, there’s a built-in delay between conception and a positive test. Most home urine tests can detect hCG about 10 days after conception. Blood tests are slightly more sensitive and can pick up very low hCG levels within 7 to 10 days after conception.
If you ovulated and conceived on the same day, that means the earliest a blood test could show a positive result is about a week later, and a urine test roughly 10 days later. Testing before that point frequently produces false negatives, not because you aren’t pregnant, but because hCG levels haven’t risen enough to register. For the most reliable urine test result, waiting until the first day of a missed period gives hCG levels time to build.
Putting the Timeline Together
Here’s what the full sequence looks like when conception happens soon after ovulation:
- Hour 0: The egg is released from the ovary and enters the fallopian tube.
- Minutes to hours later: If sperm are present in the ampulla, one penetrates the egg. The fertilized egg becomes a zygote.
- Days 1 to 5: The embryo divides as it travels through the fallopian tube and into the uterus.
- Days 6 to 10: The embryo implants in the uterine wall. hCG production begins.
- Days 7 to 10: A blood test may detect pregnancy.
- Day 10 and beyond: A home urine test may show a positive result.
The gap between “conception happened” and “you can confirm it” is roughly 10 days at minimum. That waiting period is one of the most frustrating parts of trying to conceive, but it reflects the biology of implantation and hormone production rather than any uncertainty about whether fertilization occurred.
