Your period typically starts 10 to 15 days after ovulation, with most people landing close to 14 days. This window, called the luteal phase, is the most consistent part of your menstrual cycle. Unlike the first half of your cycle, which can vary widely from month to month, the luteal phase tends to stay roughly the same length for each individual.
Why the Luteal Phase Is So Consistent
After you ovulate, the follicle that released the egg transforms into a temporary structure that pumps out progesterone. This hormone thickens and maintains the uterine lining in case a fertilized egg needs to implant. If pregnancy doesn’t occur, that structure breaks down, progesterone levels plummet, and the uterine lining sheds. That shedding is your period.
This process runs on a fairly tight biological clock. While the first half of your cycle (the time from your period to ovulation) accounts for most of the variation in overall cycle length, the second half stays relatively stable. So if your cycle is sometimes 28 days and sometimes 32 days, the difference is almost always because ovulation happened earlier or later, not because your luteal phase changed length.
This is why tracking ovulation gives you a much better prediction of when your period will arrive than simply counting from day one of your last cycle.
Signs Your Period Is Approaching
Your body gives a few signals during the days between ovulation and your period. Cervical mucus, which becomes slippery and stretchy around ovulation, dries up or turns thick and sticky afterward. From roughly day 15 to day 28 of your cycle, you can expect little to no noticeable discharge until bleeding begins.
If you track your basal body temperature (your resting temperature taken first thing in the morning), you’ll notice a small rise of about 0.3°C (roughly half a degree Fahrenheit) after ovulation. That elevated temperature stays up for the rest of the luteal phase. Some people notice it dips back down right before or on the day their period starts, which can serve as a one-day heads-up.
What a Short Luteal Phase Means
A luteal phase of 10 days or fewer is considered clinically short. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine defines this as luteal phase deficiency, though the exact cutoff varies slightly across definitions (some use 9 days, others 11). The core issue is that progesterone drops too quickly, giving the uterine lining less time to mature.
A short luteal phase matters most for people trying to conceive, because even if an egg is fertilized, the lining may shed before a pregnancy can establish itself. If your period consistently arrives less than 10 days after confirmed ovulation, that pattern is worth mentioning to a healthcare provider, especially if you’re trying to get pregnant.
Several things can contribute to a shorter luteal phase. Intense exercise, significant stress, thyroid imbalances, and certain hormonal conditions can all interfere with progesterone production after ovulation. Age plays a role too, as the years approaching menopause tend to bring more luteal phase irregularity.
When a Late Period Doesn’t Mean a Long Luteal Phase
If your period seems “late,” the most common explanation is that you ovulated later than usual, not that your luteal phase stretched. Because the first half of the cycle is so variable, a 35-day cycle might still have a perfectly normal 13-day luteal phase. Ovulation just happened on day 22 instead of day 14.
The exception is pregnancy. A fertilized egg typically implants into the uterine lining about six days after fertilization. Once implantation occurs, the embryo sends hormonal signals that keep progesterone levels elevated and prevent the lining from shedding. Your period simply doesn’t come. A missed period after confirmed ovulation, especially if it’s more than 16 days past ovulation, is the earliest reliable sign that conception may have occurred.
How to Track Your Own Luteal Phase
To know your personal luteal phase length, you need to identify when you ovulate. The most accessible methods are ovulation predictor kits (which detect a hormonal surge in urine about 24 to 36 hours before ovulation) and basal body temperature tracking (which confirms ovulation after the fact through a sustained temperature rise over three or more days). Cervical mucus observation adds another data point, since the shift from slippery to dry signals that ovulation has passed.
Once you know your ovulation day, count the days until your period starts. Do this for two or three cycles and you’ll likely find a consistent number. That number is your luteal phase length, and it becomes a reliable tool for predicting your next period. If you ovulate on a Tuesday and your luteal phase is 13 days, you can expect your period about two Mondays later.
Most cycle-tracking apps estimate ovulation based on averages, which can be off by several days. If precision matters to you, whether for conception, avoiding pregnancy, or simply planning your life, combining at least two of the physical tracking methods above gives a much more accurate picture than app predictions alone.
