How Strong Are Crowns on Front Teeth: Lifespan & Materials

Crowns on front teeth are strong enough to handle everything your natural incisors would normally do. Front teeth experience far less biting force than molars, typically between 30 and 160 Newtons in adults, and modern crown materials can withstand several times that load before fracturing. The real question isn’t whether a front crown is “strong enough” but which material gives you the best combination of durability and appearance, and what factors determine how long it lasts.

How Much Force Front Teeth Actually Handle

Your front teeth do lighter work than you might think. While molars can generate 400 to 700 Newtons of force during chewing, the incisors (your four top and bottom front teeth) typically produce 30 to 160 Newtons in adults. That’s roughly the force needed to bite through an apple or tear a piece of bread. Children generate even less, often under 35 Newtons at the front teeth.

This matters because it means a front tooth crown doesn’t need to be as tough as a molar crown. It just needs to be strong enough to handle normal biting and resist the occasional accidental impact. Both of the main crown materials used today exceed that threshold by a wide margin.

Crown Materials and Their Strength

Two materials dominate modern front tooth crowns: lithium disilicate (often sold as E.max) and zirconia. Both are ceramics, but they differ significantly in raw strength and appearance.

Lithium disilicate has a flexural strength of about 400 MPa. That’s the pressure it can take before bending to the point of fracture. For context, 400 MPa is roughly 2,500 times the maximum bite force your front teeth produce. It’s also the more popular choice for front teeth because it transmits light similarly to natural enamel, giving it a realistic, translucent look that blends in seamlessly.

Zirconia comes in at roughly 1,000 MPa, more than twice as strong. It’s virtually indestructible under normal biting conditions. Older zirconia crowns had a reputation for looking opaque and artificial, which made dentists hesitant to use them up front. Newer formulations have improved the aesthetics considerably, though lithium disilicate still tends to win on natural appearance.

Layered vs. Monolithic Crowns

Some zirconia crowns are made as a single solid piece (monolithic), while others have a zirconia core with a layer of porcelain fused over it for a more lifelike look. That porcelain layer is the weak link. Its flexural strength drops to about 100 MPa, and differences in how the two materials expand and contract with temperature can cause the porcelain veneer to chip over time. Monolithic zirconia eliminates that problem entirely. Studies show that polished monolithic zirconia surfaces remain crack-free and chip-free, and they also cause less wear on the teeth they bite against.

For most people getting a front tooth crown, the choice comes down to aesthetics versus maximum durability. If the crown is in a highly visible spot and appearance is the priority, lithium disilicate is often the better fit. If the tooth takes heavier contact or you have a history of grinding, zirconia offers a significant strength advantage.

What Determines Long-Term Survival

Material strength is only one part of the equation. How long a front crown actually lasts depends heavily on what’s underneath it.

The single biggest predictor of long-term success is how much healthy tooth structure remains after the crown is prepared. Dentists look for something called a “ferrule,” a band of solid natural tooth at least 1.5 to 2 millimeters tall that the crown grips around like a collar. This ring of tooth structure absorbs biting forces, resists leverage, and protects the root from cracking. Teeth with 2 mm or more of this natural wall height perform significantly better than teeth without it. Even the thickness of the remaining tooth matters: if the walls are thinner than 1 mm, especially between the teeth, the risk of failure goes up.

For teeth that have had root canals, preserving as much natural tooth as possible is critical. Posts placed inside the root canal are meant to help retain the crown, not to strengthen the tooth. The real structural support comes from the surrounding natural tooth. When enough healthy structure exists to create that 1.5 to 2 mm collar, the long-term outlook shifts from uncertain to favorable.

How Long Front Crowns Typically Last

Well-made crowns on front teeth routinely last a decade or longer. Studies tracking metal-ceramic crowns (the older gold standard) show 10-year survival rates of 95 to 100 percent. All-ceramic options, which are newer and more commonly used on front teeth today, show slightly more variable results depending on the specific material and technique, but modern lithium disilicate and zirconia crowns consistently perform well in long-term follow-up.

Most crown failures aren’t dramatic fractures. They’re more often related to the bond between the crown and the tooth weakening over time, decay forming at the margins where the crown meets the natural tooth, or gum recession exposing the edge of the crown. These are gradual problems, not sudden ones, and they’re largely preventable with good oral hygiene.

What Can Damage a Front Crown

The forces of normal eating won’t threaten a front crown. Problems come from unexpected impacts and bad habits.

Hard foods are the number one cause of cracked crowns. Biting directly into ice, hard candy, unpopped popcorn kernels, or tough nuts can fracture a crown in a single bite. Ice is particularly risky because the cold makes the ceramic more rigid and brittle, and the jagged edges of a crushed ice cube can find a weak spot. Even crusty bread, like a hard bagel or baguette, can stress a front crown more than you’d expect.

Sticky foods pose a different threat. Caramels, taffy, gummy candies, and chewing gum can grab onto a crown and pull it loose, especially if the bond has weakened over time. This is a bigger risk with temporary crowns, but it applies to permanent ones too.

Teeth grinding (bruxism) is the silent threat. If you clench or grind at night, your front teeth may experience forces well beyond normal biting levels, sustained over hours. A night guard is the simplest way to protect both your crowns and your natural teeth.

Protecting Your Crown Day to Day

Front crowns don’t require special maintenance, but a few habits make a real difference. Flossing around a crown matters as much as flossing anywhere else, but technique counts. Instead of snapping floss upward between your teeth, slide it gently out to the side so you’re not pulling up on the crown’s edge.

Sugary and acidic drinks like soda, sports drinks, and citrus juice won’t crack your crown, but over time they can weaken the cement that holds it in place. This happens gradually, so it’s not a reason to panic after one glass of orange juice, but regular exposure adds up.

If you have a temporary crown while waiting for your permanent one, avoid chewing on that side entirely. Temporary crowns are held with weaker cement by design (so they can be removed easily) and are made of softer material that won’t hold up to real chewing forces.

A permanent front crown, properly placed on a tooth with enough supporting structure, is a reliable long-term restoration. For most people, it will hold up to daily use for well over a decade without any issues.
