Motivation Runs on Interest, Not Importance

Most people can force themselves through a boring but important task because their brain assigns it priority based on consequences and deadlines. The ADHD brain doesn’t work this way. Instead, it runs on what’s been called an interest-based nervous system, where attention locks in only when something triggers genuine interest, novelty, competition, or urgency. One particularly intense pattern linked to ADHD is rejection sensitive dysphoria, where perceived rejection or disapproval triggers overwhelming emotional pain. People who experience this are more likely to interpret ambiguous social interactions as rejection, feel embarrassed or self-conscious with very little provocation, and struggle to contain their emotional response when they feel criticized.
