The most effective way to avoid mosquito bites is a layered approach: use an EPA-registered repellent, wear the right clothing, and reduce mosquito habitat around your home. No single strategy is foolproof, but combining a few of these methods dramatically cuts down on bites whether you’re in your backyard or traveling somewhere with mosquito-borne disease.
Choose the Right Repellent
Not all repellents are equal, and the biggest factor in how well they work is the concentration of the active ingredient. Products with less than 10% active ingredient typically offer only 1 to 2 hours of protection. Higher concentrations last longer, though DEET’s effectiveness peaks at around 50%, meaning anything above that doesn’t add meaningful extra protection time.
The most widely available and well-tested active ingredients are DEET, picaridin, and IR3535. All three are registered with the EPA and recommended by the CDC. When shopping, check the percentage on the label and match it to how long you’ll be outside. A 25% DEET or picaridin product will cover a few hours of yard work or a hike. For a quick trip to the mailbox, you don’t need the heavy-duty stuff.
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (sometimes listed as PMD) is a plant-derived option that holds up well in testing. It provides protection comparable to repellents with 15% to 20% DEET, making it a solid choice if you prefer to avoid synthetic ingredients. It does need to be reapplied more frequently than higher-concentration DEET products. One important note: oil of lemon eucalyptus is not recommended for children under 3.
Apply repellent to exposed skin and over clothing, not under it. Sunscreen goes on first, repellent second. And reapply after swimming or heavy sweating.
What to Wear (and What Color)
Long sleeves, long pants, and socks create a physical barrier that mosquitoes can’t easily bite through, especially if the fabric isn’t skin-tight. Loose-fitting clothes make it harder for them to reach your skin. But what you wear matters beyond just coverage.
Research from the University of Washington found that mosquitoes, after detecting the carbon dioxide you exhale, fly toward specific colors: red, orange, black, and cyan. They largely ignore green, purple, blue, and white. This happens because human skin, regardless of pigmentation, emits light in the red-orange wavelength range, and mosquitoes have learned to associate those longer wavelengths with a blood meal. When researchers filtered out long-wavelength light or covered skin with a green glove, mosquitoes lost interest. So wearing lighter colors in the green, blue, purple, or white range can make you less visible to mosquitoes once they’ve picked up your CO2 trail.
For extra protection, treat your clothing with permethrin, an insecticide that kills or repels mosquitoes on contact. Factory-treated garments (sold by brands like Insect Shield) remain effective for up to 70 washes. If you spray-treat clothes yourself, expect the protection to last about 6 washes before you need to reapply. Permethrin goes on clothing only, never directly on skin.
Know When Mosquitoes Are Most Active
Different mosquito species bite at different times of day, and knowing the pattern helps you plan when to be most vigilant. Aedes aegypti, the species that carries Zika, dengue, and chikungunya, is most active during early morning and late afternoon. Culex mosquitoes, responsible for spreading West Nile virus, bite primarily from dusk through early morning.
The practical takeaway: there’s no single “safe” window. If you’re in an area with both species, you have peak biting risk at dawn, late afternoon, and after sunset. During those windows, layer your defenses. The midday hours tend to be the calmest, though mosquitoes in shaded, humid areas can still be active.
Eliminate Standing Water Around Your Home
Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, and they don’t need much. A space as small as a bottle cap can serve as a breeding ground. Walking your yard once a week to dump out collected water is one of the most effective things you can do to reduce mosquito populations near your home.
The obvious culprits are bird baths, pet dishes, wading pools, and clogged rain gutters. But mosquitoes also breed in less obvious spots:
- Plant saucers under potted flowers and herbs
- Tarps and pool covers where rainwater pools in folds
- Old tires that collect and hold water for weeks
- Wheelbarrows, buckets, and paint cans left in the yard
- Tree holes and hollow stumps that fill with rain
- Boats, canoes, or kayaks stored upright
- Trash can lids and recycling bins without drainage
- Air conditioner drip trays and HVAC runoff areas
- Piles of lawn clippings or dead leaves that trap moisture
For water features you want to keep, like ornamental ponds or bird baths, change the water at least once a week or add a small pump to keep it circulating. Mosquito larvae can’t survive in moving water.
Use Screens and Nets Effectively
Window and door screens are your first line of defense indoors. Standard 18- to 20-mesh screens (18 to 20 openings per linear inch) block mosquitoes while still allowing good airflow. Check your screens for tears or gaps, especially around the edges where they meet the frame. A single small hole is an open invitation.
If you’re sleeping in an area without air conditioning or reliable screens, a bed net is essential. Look for nets treated with permethrin for added protection. Tuck the edges under the mattress so there are no gaps, and make sure the netting doesn’t rest against your skin, since mosquitoes can bite through it on contact.
For very small biting insects like no-see-ums, standard mesh won’t cut it. You’d need fine mesh with 50 or more holes per inch to stop those, though that also reduces airflow noticeably.
Skip the Supplements and Gadgets
You’ve probably heard that taking vitamin B1 (thiamine) or eating garlic can make you less attractive to mosquitoes. The science on this is clear: it doesn’t work. A scoping review of thiamine research found that across multiple studies using larger sample sizes, various mosquito species, and proper controls, oral thiamine had zero effect on how attractive people were to mosquitoes. In one experiment, mosquitoes bit thiamine-dosed subjects just as eagerly as untreated ones. The review concluded that thiamine cannot repel mosquitoes at any dosage or by any route.
Ultrasonic repellent devices, citronella candles, and wearable repellent bands also perform poorly in controlled testing. Citronella candles may slightly reduce bites in the immediate area, but they’re far less effective than a topical repellent. Your best bet is sticking with proven methods: EPA-registered repellents, permethrin-treated clothing, physical barriers, and reducing breeding sites around your home.
