Becoming a cath lab tech typically takes two to four years, depending on whether you pursue an associate or bachelor’s degree in cardiovascular technology. The role pays a median salary of $67,260 per year, with strong demand driven by an aging population. Here’s what each step of the path looks like.

What a Cath Lab Tech Actually Does

Cath lab techs work alongside cardiologists during procedures that diagnose and treat heart and blood vessel conditions. You’ll operate fluoroscopy machines that produce real-time X-ray images, helping doctors guide catheters through blood vessels to the heart. You’ll prepare patients, monitor vital signs throughout procedures, and maintain a sterile environment during catheter insertions, angioplasties, stent placements, and electrophysiology studies.

The role carries real urgency. During heart attacks, cath lab teams are called in to assist with emergency angioplasties or stent placements, sometimes outside regular hours. You’ll need to stay calm under pressure and move quickly with precise, practiced steps.

The Physical Reality of the Job

This is not a desk job. You’ll stand for long stretches next to the procedure table, often during prolonged fluoroscopy cases. Every team member in the cath lab wears lead body aprons and thyroid shields to block radiation exposure. These aprons are heavy, and wearing them day after day creates a real orthopedic burden on your back, shoulders, and joints. Newer labs are moving toward ceiling-mounted radiation shields and lighter protective gear, but lead aprons remain standard at most facilities. If you have chronic back or joint issues, this is worth considering seriously before committing to the field.

Education: Degree Programs and Prerequisites

Most cath lab techs enter the field through an associate or bachelor’s degree program in cardiovascular technology. These programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), which is the gold standard. Graduating from a CAAHEP-accredited program gives you the simplest path to certification.

Before you can apply to a cardiovascular technology program, you’ll need prerequisite coursework. At Northeast State Community College, for example, prerequisites include two semesters of anatomy and physiology, a chemistry or microbiology course, English composition, statistics, an introductory psychology course, and a speech communication class. You need a C or better in every prerequisite, and your biology courses must have been completed within the last ten years. Requirements vary by school, but this gives you a representative picture.

Programs themselves blend classroom instruction with extensive clinical hours in working cath labs. The clinical component is critical, because certification exams are built around real procedural knowledge.

An Alternative Path for Rad Techs

If you’re already a registered radiologic technologist, you don’t need to start over. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) offers a postprimary certification in Cardiac Interventional Radiography. You’ll need to hold existing ARRT credentials in a qualifying discipline, complete structured education requirements specific to cardiac intervention, and pass the specialty exam. Many hospitals actively recruit rad techs into cath lab roles because their fluoroscopy experience translates directly.

Getting Certified: The RCIS Credential

The primary credential for cath lab techs is the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS), issued by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Most employers either require or strongly prefer it. The exam costs $365 and consists of 170 questions (150 scored, 20 unscored) taken on a computer over three hours. Content covers the tasks and knowledge areas that working cath lab techs use daily.

There are three ways to qualify for the exam:

  • Graduate of an accredited program: If your cardiovascular technology program holds programmatic accreditation, you’re eligible to sit for the exam upon graduation. This is the most straightforward route.
  • Graduate of a non-accredited program: You’ll need at least one year of specialty training with a minimum of 800 clinical hours in invasive cardiovascular technology, all completed as part of your educational program. Hours completed after graduation or outside program requirements don’t count.
  • Health science degree plus work experience: If you hold a certificate or degree in a related health science field (nursing, respiratory therapy, radiologic technology, paramedic/EMT, ultrasound), you can qualify with one year of full-time work experience in invasive cardiovascular technology and 600 documented cardiac diagnostic or interventional procedures across your career.

All applicants need at least a high school diploma or GED at the time of application.

State Licensing

Most states do not require a separate state license to work as a cath lab tech. National certification through the RCIS is sufficient in the majority of the country. However, a few states have additional requirements. Arkansas, for instance, requires a Limited Specialty License through its Department of Health, which in turn requires that you hold RCIS credentials and pay a $45 license fee. Before you start working, check your state’s health department website to confirm whether a separate license applies.

Salary and Where the Money Is

The median annual wage for cardiovascular technologists and technicians was $67,260 as of May 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But your setting matters enormously. Cath lab techs in outpatient care centers earned a median of $93,100, nearly $28,000 more than those in hospitals, where the median sat at $65,270. Medical and diagnostic laboratories paid $79,730, and physician offices came in at $70,980.

Hospital jobs are the most common and often the easiest to land as a new grad, but if maximizing income is a priority, outpatient centers and diagnostic labs are worth targeting once you have a couple of years of experience.

A Realistic Timeline

If you’re starting from scratch with no college credits, expect to spend about one year on prerequisites and two years in a cardiovascular technology associate program, putting you at roughly three years total before you sit for the RCIS exam. A bachelor’s program takes four years but may open doors to supervisory roles or advanced positions faster. Rad techs making a lateral move can often transition in under a year, depending on how quickly they complete the structured education requirements and accumulate enough procedural experience.

The fastest possible route is enrolling in a CAAHEP-accredited associate program that includes prerequisites in its curriculum, which some do. That can compress the timeline to about two years from enrollment to certification eligibility.
