Becoming a dental assistant is one of the faster routes into healthcare, with most people completing training in under a year and entering a field that pays a median salary of $47,300 per year. Choose Your Education Path
You have two main options: a certificate program or an associate degree. Certificate programs are the faster route. An associate degree takes two years and covers similar material but in greater depth, with additional general education courses built in.
Both paths teach the same core skills: chairside assisting, dental radiography (X-rays), infection control, and dental materials. The practical difference is speed versus depth. If you want to start working quickly, a certificate gets you there. If you’re considering eventually moving into office management, hygiene school, or another allied health role, a degree gives you transferable credits. Some schools let you apply certificate credits toward a degree later, so you don’t have to decide everything upfront.
One thing that matters more than the type of program is whether it’s accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Accreditation is a requirement in many states for sitting for certification exams and for qualifying for federal financial aid. Graduating from a non-accredited program can limit your options, so check this before enrolling.
What You’ll Actually Do on the Job
Dental assisting splits into two broad categories: clinical work and administrative work. Most assistants do some of both, though larger offices sometimes separate the roles.
On the clinical side, you’ll spend most of your day chairside with the dentist. This means handing instruments during procedures, operating suction, preparing materials like filling compounds, taking X-rays, and helping keep the patient comfortable. You’ll sterilize instruments, set up and break down treatment rooms, and manage infection control protocols. In some states, you can also take impressions, apply fluoride, or place temporary restorations.
On the administrative side, the work looks more like a front-office role: greeting patients, scheduling appointments, handling insurance claims, processing billing, managing patient records in electronic systems, ordering supplies, and answering phones. In a small practice with just a few staff members, you’ll likely bounce between clinical and administrative tasks throughout the day.
State Requirements Vary Significantly
This is where things get complicated. There is no single national standard for dental assistants. Each state sets its own rules about what training you need, whether you must register or obtain a license, and which clinical tasks you’re allowed to perform.
Some states have minimal barriers to entry. Alaska, Hawaii, and Illinois, for example, have no registration or licensure requirements for entry-level dental assistants. You can potentially start working after on-the-job training. Other states like California require formal licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant, which involves completing an accredited program and passing exams. New York and Arkansas fall somewhere in between, requiring registration and meeting specific educational criteria.
Before you invest in a training program, look up your state’s requirements through your state dental board or the American Dental Assistants Association. This tells you exactly what credentials you need to work legally and what procedures you’re allowed to perform in your state.
National Certification
The Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential from the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) is the most widely recognized national certification. It isn’t required in every state, but earning it strengthens your resume and is mandatory or preferred in many states.
The CDA exam covers three areas: radiation health and safety, infection control, and general chairside assisting. You’ll answer 245 questions over about three hours and fifteen minutes, and you’re given a 60-day window to schedule and complete the test. Eligibility typically requires graduating from a CODA-accredited program or a combination of work experience and education.
Once certified, you renew annually. Renewal requires completing continuing education credits and maintaining a current CPR certificate, along with paying a renewal fee. This keeps your skills current and your credential active.
Pay and Job Prospects

Your actual pay will depend on your location, experience, certifications, and whether you work in a private practice, specialty office, or hospital setting. Metropolitan areas and states with higher costs of living generally pay more.
Dental assistants with national certification or expanded function credentials tend to earn more than those without. Specialty practices (orthodontics, oral surgery, pediatric dentistry) also sometimes pay a premium because the work requires more specialized knowledge.
Moving Up: Expanded Functions
If you want to grow beyond the entry-level role, becoming an Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) is the most common next step. EFDAs have additional training that qualifies them to perform more advanced procedures. Depending on your state, this can include applying sealants, placing and carving fillings, performing coronal polishing, and applying topical anesthetic.
The path to EFDA status typically involves a few years of work experience, additional coursework through an approved program, and passing a supplemental exam. Many states recognize DANB’s expanded function exams as part of their requirements. Since each state defines expanded functions differently, the specific duties you gain access to vary by location.
Beyond EFDA, some dental assistants use their experience as a launching point for dental hygiene programs, office management roles, or dental sales positions. The clinical knowledge you build as an assistant translates well into these related careers.
Getting Started: A Practical Timeline
For someone starting from scratch, a realistic timeline looks like this. Spend a few weeks researching your state’s specific requirements and identifying CODA-accredited programs near you. Complete a certificate program in about nine months, during which you’ll get both classroom instruction and supervised clinical practice. After graduating, schedule and pass any required state or national exams. Many new graduates find employment within a few weeks of finishing their program, since dental offices frequently hire directly from local training programs.
If your state allows on-the-job training for entry-level positions, you could start even sooner by finding a dentist willing to train you. This path works but limits your advancement until you complete formal education and certification. Starting with a structured program gives you a stronger foundation and more flexibility in where you can work.
