How to Bring a Fever Down Naturally at Home

Most fevers don’t need medication to come down. Your body raises its temperature on purpose to fight infection, and several simple strategies can keep you comfortable while your immune system does its work. The key is helping your body release excess heat gradually, without triggering the shivering response that drives your temperature even higher.

A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or above is considered a fever. Most low-grade fevers in otherwise healthy adults resolve on their own within a day or two. The techniques below work best for mild to moderate fevers. Adults with temperatures of 103°F (39.4°C) or higher typically look and feel noticeably sick and may need more than natural approaches alone.

Why Your Body Creates a Fever

Understanding what’s happening inside your body helps explain why certain cooling methods work and others backfire. When you get an infection, your immune system releases signaling molecules that travel to the hypothalamus, the brain’s thermostat. The hypothalamus then raises its temperature set point, essentially deciding that 101°F or 102°F is the new “normal.”

To reach that higher set point, your body narrows blood vessels near the skin to trap heat, ramps up your metabolism to generate more warmth, and may trigger shivering to produce heat through rapid muscle contractions. This is why you feel cold and reach for blankets even though you’re running hot. Every natural cooling strategy needs to work with this biology, not against it.

Stay Hydrated, Then Hydrate More

Fever accelerates fluid loss through sweating, faster breathing, and increased metabolism. Your body is burning through calories and water faster than usual just to maintain that elevated temperature. Dehydration makes it harder for your body to regulate heat and can make you feel significantly worse.

Water is the foundation, but it’s not enough on its own if you’re sweating heavily or haven’t been eating. You lose sodium and other electrolytes through sweat, and replacing them matters. The simplest approach: alternate between plain water and something containing electrolytes. Diluted fruit juice, broth, or a homemade solution of water with a small amount of salt and sugar all work. The World Health Organization’s oral rehydration formula uses roughly equal parts sodium and glucose at low concentrations, which helps your intestines absorb fluid more efficiently. You don’t need to be precise at home, but the principle is useful: a little salt and sugar in your water beats plain water for rehydration.

Sip steadily rather than gulping large amounts. If you’re urinating less than usual or your urine is dark, you need more fluid.

Use Lukewarm Water, Not Cold

A lukewarm sponge bath or compress is one of the most effective ways to help your body shed heat. The recommended water temperature is 90°F to 95°F (32°C to 35°C), which feels slightly cool against feverish skin but won’t shock your system.

Focus on areas where blood vessels run close to the surface: the forehead, neck, inner wrists, and the crooks of your elbows. A damp cloth on these spots transfers heat away from your blood as it circulates. You can also sit in a shallow lukewarm bath for 10 to 15 minutes.

Cold water, ice packs, and rubbing alcohol are all counterproductive. They drop skin temperature too quickly, which signals the hypothalamus that you’re getting cold. Your body responds by constricting blood vessels and shivering, both of which generate more internal heat and can actually push your fever higher. The goal is gentle, gradual cooling.

Dress Light and Keep the Room Cool

Your instinct when feverish is to pile on blankets because you feel cold. That sensation comes from the gap between your current body temperature and the new, higher set point your brain has chosen. But bundling up traps heat against your skin and prevents the natural cooling that happens when warmth radiates off your body.

Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabric. Cotton is ideal. Light colors reflect heat better than dark ones. A single sheet or light blanket is enough for bed. If you start shivering, add one thin layer rather than burying yourself, and remove it once the shivering stops.

Keep the room comfortably cool with some air circulation. A gentle fan pointed nearby (not directly at you) helps move warm air away from your body. Cracking a window can help if the outside air is cooler than the room.

What to Avoid

  • Ice baths or very cold showers. These trigger intense shivering and vasoconstriction, trapping heat inside your body and potentially raising your core temperature.
  • Alcohol. It dehydrates you and impairs your immune response. The old advice about “sweating out a fever” with whiskey does neither safely.

When a Fever Needs More Than Home Care

Most fevers in healthy adults are self-limiting and respond well to the strategies above. But certain combinations of symptoms signal something more serious. A fever paired with a stiff neck and headache, difficulty breathing, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, a new rash, unexplained bruising or bleeding, or confusion warrants prompt medical attention.
