How to Bring Down Swelling in Feet at Home

Swollen feet usually respond well to a combination of elevation, movement, and simple lifestyle adjustments. The fastest relief comes from raising your feet above heart level while lying down, which lets gravity pull trapped fluid back toward your core. For longer-lasting results, you’ll likely need to address what’s driving the swelling in the first place, whether that’s too much sodium, prolonged sitting, or an underlying health issue.

Elevate Your Feet Above Your Heart

Elevation is the single most effective immediate strategy. The key detail most people get wrong: your feet need to be above the level of your heart, not just propped on an ottoman. Lying on your back with your legs resting on a stack of pillows or against a wall works well. Sitting in a recliner with your feet slightly raised won’t do nearly as much because gravity still has the advantage.

Aim for multiple sessions throughout the day rather than one long stretch. Even 15 to 20 minutes at a time can make a noticeable difference, and repeating this three or four times daily keeps fluid from pooling again between sessions. If your feet swell predictably (after a long shift, a flight, or by evening), elevating them before the swelling peaks is more effective than waiting until your shoes feel tight.

Use Ankle Pumps and Gentle Movement

Your calf muscles act as a pump for your veins, squeezing blood and fluid upward each time they contract. When you sit or stand without moving for hours, that pump shuts off and fluid settles into your feet. Ankle pumps are the simplest way to restart it: point your toes downward, then pull them back toward your shin, alternating steadily for two to three minutes. Repeat this two to three times per hour when you’re sitting for long periods.

Walking is even better. A 10-minute walk engages the full calf muscle pump and gets your lymphatic system moving, which handles much of the fluid drainage in your legs. If walking isn’t possible, even shifting your weight from foot to foot while standing, or doing seated calf raises, helps. The goal is simply to avoid staying completely still for more than 30 to 60 minutes at a time.

Cut Back on Sodium

Excess sodium causes your body to hold onto water, and that extra fluid often shows up first in your feet and ankles because gravity pulls it there. The average American takes in about 3,700 mg of sodium per day. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 1,500 mg daily, and most major health organizations suggest staying under 2,000 mg if you’re dealing with fluid retention.

The biggest sources aren’t the salt shaker on your table. Processed foods, restaurant meals, canned soups, deli meats, and sauces account for most dietary sodium. Reading nutrition labels and cooking more meals at home are the two changes that make the biggest impact. Potassium-rich foods like bananas, sweet potatoes, and leafy greens help counterbalance sodium by encouraging your kidneys to excrete more of it.

Stay Hydrated

It sounds counterintuitive, but drinking more water often reduces swelling. When you’re dehydrated, your body holds onto the fluid it has, concentrating sodium in your tissues and worsening puffiness. Staying well-hydrated signals your kidneys to flush excess sodium and fluid rather than hoarding it. There’s no magic number for daily water intake since it varies by body size, climate, and activity level, but if your urine is pale yellow, you’re generally in good shape.

Try Compression Socks

Compression socks apply graduated pressure to your lower legs, tightest at the ankle and gradually loosening toward the knee. This prevents fluid from pooling and supports your veins in pushing blood back up. They come in several pressure levels, measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg):

  • 15 to 20 mmHg: Mild support, good for occasional puffiness from travel, long days on your feet, or early-stage swelling.
  • 20 to 30 mmHg: The most commonly prescribed range for mild to moderate swelling. This is what most people with recurring foot and ankle edema will need.
  • 30 to 40 mmHg: Firmer therapeutic compression, typically for more severe or chronic conditions like significant venous insufficiency or lymphedema.

Start with the 15 to 20 mmHg range if you’ve never worn compression before. Put them on first thing in the morning before swelling has a chance to build, and remove them at bedtime. If lower compression doesn’t control your swelling, a healthcare provider can recommend the right step up.

Soak in Cool or Lukewarm Water

Many women notice their feet swell in the days before their period. This is driven by hormonal shifts that cause the body to retain more fluid. Magnesium supplementation has shown benefit for PMS-related bloating and fluid retention. Studies have used doses ranging from 200 to 360 mg of elemental magnesium daily, sometimes combined with vitamin B6. If your foot swelling follows a predictable monthly pattern, this is worth trying for a couple of cycles to see if it helps.

Pregnancy is another common trigger, particularly in the third trimester. The same strategies apply: elevation, movement, compression, and reducing sodium. When Swelling Signals Something Serious

Most foot swelling is harmless and responds to the strategies above. But certain patterns warrant prompt evaluation. Swelling in only one foot or leg raises the possibility of a blood clot (deep vein thrombosis), especially if it comes with warmth, redness, or tenderness along the inner calf or thigh. No single symptom reliably confirms or rules out a clot, so one-sided swelling that appears suddenly and can’t be explained by an injury should be evaluated with imaging rather than watched at home.

Swelling that leaves a lasting dent when you press your finger into the skin (called pitting edema) and doesn’t improve with elevation may point to heart, kidney, or liver issues. The same is true for swelling that worsens progressively over weeks, comes with shortness of breath, or is accompanied by significant weight gain over a short period. These patterns suggest the swelling is a symptom of something systemic rather than a local fluid issue in your feet.
