The fastest way to bring your blood sugar down is to drink water and move your body. If your blood sugar is above 240 mg/dL, check your urine for ketones before doing anything else. If ketones are present, or if your reading is above 270 mg/dL, skip the exercise and contact your doctor or head to the emergency room, because physical activity at that level can trigger a dangerous condition called ketoacidosis.
Drink Water First
When your blood sugar is high, your body tries to get rid of the excess glucose through your kidneys. The glucose pulls water into the urine, which is why high blood sugar makes you urinate more and feel dehydrated. Drinking water supports this process by giving your kidneys more fluid to work with, helping them filter out glucose faster. It won’t dramatically drop your numbers on its own, but it’s the simplest first step and prevents dehydration from making things worse.
There’s no magic amount to drink. Aim for a full glass right away and keep sipping steadily. Avoid juice, soda, or anything with sugar in it. Plain water is ideal. If your blood sugar is running high regularly and you’re not drinking enough water throughout the day, that alone can make glucose regulation harder. Go for a Short Walk
Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to lower blood sugar in the moment. When your muscles contract, they absorb glucose from your bloodstream through a process that works independently of insulin. This is important because it means movement helps even if your body isn’t responding well to insulin, which is the core problem in type 2 diabetes.
You don’t need a long workout. Research highlighted by the Cleveland Clinic shows that walking for as little as two to five minutes after a meal can reduce your blood sugar. Your blood sugar typically peaks 30 to 90 minutes after eating, so that window is the best time to get moving. A 10 to 15 minute walk after meals is a simple habit that makes a measurable difference over time.
One critical safety note: if your blood sugar is above 270 mg/dL, test for ketones before exercising. If ketones are present in your urine, do not exercise. Working out with high ketones can push you into ketoacidosis, which is a medical emergency. Also stop exercising if your blood sugar drops to 70 mg/dL or lower.
Eat Fiber With Your Meals
Soluble fiber, the kind found in oats, beans, lentils, apples, and psyllium husk, slows down how quickly sugar enters your bloodstream after you eat. This won’t help you in an acute moment when your sugar is already high, but it’s one of the most reliable strategies for keeping your numbers from spiking in the first place. Adding a serving of beans to a rice dish, eating an apple with peanut butter instead of crackers, or stirring psyllium fiber into water before a carb-heavy meal can all blunt the glucose response. Think of fiber as a speed bump for sugar absorption.
Use Your Insulin Correctly
If you take rapid-acting insulin, it starts working within about 15 minutes, peaks around one hour, and lasts two to four hours. If you’ve been prescribed insulin for high blood sugar corrections, follow your dosing plan. The most common mistake is “stacking” doses, where you take more insulin because you don’t feel it working fast enough, then end up with dangerously low blood sugar an hour later. Give each dose time to take full effect before adjusting.
If you’re on other diabetes medications and your blood sugar is consistently running high, that’s a conversation to have with whoever manages your prescriptions. A single high reading after a big meal is normal. Readings that stay elevated for hours or keep climbing above 200 mg/dL regularly mean your current plan may need adjustment.
Try Vinegar Before Meals
Apple cider vinegar has modest but real evidence behind it. Check Your Magnesium Intake
Magnesium plays a quiet but significant role in how well your body uses insulin. When magnesium levels drop, insulin becomes less effective at moving sugar into your cells. Research published in the American Heart Association’s journal Hypertension found that even in lean, otherwise healthy people, magnesium deficiency caused a measurable decrease in insulin sensitivity. The likely mechanism is that low magnesium raises calcium levels inside cells, which interferes with insulin signaling.
Many people with diabetes are low in magnesium without knowing it. Good food sources include spinach, pumpkin seeds, almonds, black beans, and dark chocolate. If your diet is low in these foods, a magnesium supplement may help improve your blood sugar over time, though it won’t produce an immediate drop in your current reading.
Know Your Target Numbers
It helps to know what you’re aiming for. For most adults with diabetes who aren’t pregnant, hospitals use a general target range of 100 to 180 mg/dL. Fasting blood sugar (first thing in the morning, before eating) should generally be under 130 mg/dL for most people with diabetes, and readings two hours after a meal should stay below 180 mg/dL. If your blood sugar is in the 200s and you’re feeling okay, the strategies above (water, walking, insulin if prescribed) will typically bring it down within an hour or two. If it’s above 240 mg/dL, test for ketones. If you’re experiencing confusion, extreme thirst, nausea, or fruity-smelling breath alongside very high readings, those are signs of a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.
