Move Your Body First

Physical activity is the single most effective non-medication tool for pulling sugar out of your bloodstream quickly. When your muscles contract, they open channels that absorb glucose directly from the blood, and this process works even when your body isn’t responding well to insulin. That’s why exercise helps whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or you’re just dealing with an unusually high reading after a big meal.

You don’t need an intense workout. A 15- to 30-minute brisk walk is enough to make a noticeable difference. One important exception: if your blood sugar is above 240 mg/dL and you have type 1 diabetes (or suspect you might have ketones), check for ketones before exercising.
