How to Buy Good Essential Oils and Spot Fakes

Buying a good essential oil comes down to five things: the right extraction method for the plant, proper packaging, transparent purity testing, realistic pricing, and knowing what red flags to avoid. The market is flooded with diluted, synthetic, and mislabeled oils, but once you know what to look for, spotting quality becomes straightforward.

Check the Extraction Method

Different plants require different extraction methods, and the wrong method can degrade an oil’s quality or leave behind unwanted residues. A reputable seller will always list the extraction method on the label or product page. If it’s missing, move on.

Steam distillation is the most common method and works well for hardy, aromatic plants like lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary. Steam passes through the plant material, vaporizes the volatile compounds, and then condenses them back into liquid. Delicate flowers like rose and neroli use a variation called hydro distillation, where the plant material is immersed directly in water before heating. This gentler process prevents damage to fragile petals.

Citrus oils (orange, lime, grapefruit, lemon) should be cold pressed, meaning the oil is mechanically squeezed from the fruit peel without heat. This preserves the bright, fresh aromatic profile that makes citrus oils distinctive. If you see a citrus oil labeled “steam distilled,” it’s not necessarily bad, but it will smell noticeably different from a cold-pressed version.

Two other methods are worth knowing about. Solvent extraction is used for plants like jasmine and benzoin that don’t release their oils easily through distillation. The resulting product is called an “absolute” rather than an essential oil, and it can contain trace amounts of the solvent used during processing. Some aromatherapists use absolutes sparingly for this reason. CO2 extraction is a newer, more expensive process that uses pressurized carbon dioxide as a solvent. Because it operates at low temperatures and leaves no solvent residue, CO2 extracts are often considered the closest to the plant’s natural chemical profile. You’ll see this method used for turmeric and coffee oils.

Look at the Bottle

This is one of the easiest quality checks. A good essential oil will come in a dark glass bottle, either amber or cobalt blue. Amber glass blocks nearly 99% of UV rays, while cobalt blocks roughly 50 to 70%. Both protect the oil from light-driven oxidation, which breaks down the active compounds and weakens both the scent and any therapeutic properties. Clear glass offers almost no UV protection, so avoid oils sold in it unless the seller specifically packages them for immediate transfer to a dark container.

Never buy essential oils stored in plastic. Essential oils are naturally reactive and many act like solvents. Over time, they can eat through plastic, warp the container, and cause leaks. Worse, plastic can leach chemicals called plasticizers into the oil, contaminating what you’re putting in your diffuser or on your skin. Even short-term plastic storage can alter the oil’s chemical structure. If a company sells “pure” essential oils in plastic dropper bottles, that’s a clear sign they’re cutting corners.

Understand Purity Testing

The gold standard test you’ll see referenced everywhere is GC-MS, which stands for gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. In simple terms, the gas chromatography step separates the oil into its individual chemical components, and the mass spectrometry step identifies each one by breaking molecules into fragments and sorting them by weight. This creates a detailed fingerprint of everything in the oil.

GC-MS is genuinely useful. It can reveal if an oil has an unusual chemical profile, flag the presence of certain contaminants like dibutyl phthalate (an industrial chemical found in adulterated products), and confirm that the oil’s composition matches what you’d expect from that plant species. Reputable companies will provide GC-MS reports for each batch, often accessible by lot number on their website.

That said, GC-MS has real limitations. It cannot tell you whether a specific compound in the oil is natural or synthetic. If someone adds a lab-made version of a naturally occurring compound, and it leaves no telltale impurities from the manufacturing process, GC-MS alone won’t catch it. So while a batch-specific GC-MS report is a strong positive signal, it’s not a guarantee of perfection. Companies that invest in additional testing methods beyond GC-MS are generally more trustworthy.

Try the Paper Test at Home

You can do a simple purity check with nothing more than a sheet of white paper. Place a single drop of essential oil on the paper and let it dry completely, which takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Once dry, examine the spot. A pure essential oil will evaporate cleanly, leaving the paper dry and not greasy to the touch. If you see a visible oily or greasy ring around where the drop sat, the oil has likely been diluted with a carrier oil or another fatty substance.

This test isn’t foolproof. Some thicker, resinous oils (like sandalwood or vetiver) may leave a faint mark even when pure, and synthetic adulterants that aren’t oily won’t show up this way. But for everyday oils like lavender, tea tree, or peppermint, it’s a quick and useful screening tool. Protect your work surface with wax paper or foil, since the oil can bleed through.

Use Price as a Reality Check

Essential oil prices vary dramatically depending on how much plant material is needed to produce a small amount of oil. Lavender, tea tree, and citrus oils are relatively high-yield, so they’re affordable. Rose, neroli, and melissa (lemon balm) require enormous quantities of plant material for a tiny amount of oil, making them among the most expensive essential oils in the world. A 5 ml bottle of genuine rose otto can cost $30 to over $100 depending on the source and quality.

If every oil in a company’s lineup is priced identically, that’s a red flag. It costs vastly more to produce rose oil than orange oil, and honest pricing reflects that. Similarly, if you find rose, neroli, or sandalwood oil at suspiciously low prices, it’s almost certainly diluted, synthetic, or mislabeled. A good rule: if the price seems too good to be true for a rare oil, it is.

What the Label Should Tell You

A quality essential oil label includes several specific pieces of information. Look for the common name and the Latin botanical name (for example, “Lavender” and “Lavandula angustifolia”). This matters because many plants have multiple species with very different chemical profiles. “Lavender” could be true lavender, lavandin, or spike lavender, and each has distinct properties and price points.

The label should also list the country of origin, the plant part used (leaf, flower, root, bark), and the extraction method. Many good companies also include the batch or lot number, which lets you look up the corresponding GC-MS test results. If a bottle just says “lavender oil” with no botanical name, no origin, and no extraction method, you’re probably looking at a fragrance oil or a heavily diluted product.

Spotting Common Red Flags

  • Uniform pricing across all oils. Production costs vary enormously between species. A company charging the same $8 for rose and lemon oil is not selling pure rose oil.
  • Plastic bottles. Any company selling pure essential oils in plastic either doesn’t understand the product or isn’t selling what they claim.
  • “Therapeutic grade” or “certified pure” labels. There is no independent governing body that certifies essential oil grades. These are marketing terms created by individual companies, not regulated standards.
  • No botanical name on the label. Without the Latin name, you have no way to verify which species of plant was used.
  • No batch-specific testing available. Companies that test their oils make results accessible. Companies that don’t test have nothing to show you.
  • Sold primarily through MLM structures. Multi-level marketing companies often charge premium prices that reflect their commission structure rather than oil quality. You can find equivalent or better oils from direct retailers at lower prices.

Where to Buy

Independent aromatherapy suppliers with transparent sourcing tend to offer the best combination of quality and value. Look for companies that list their GC-MS results publicly, name their distillers or growing regions, and price their oils in proportion to rarity. Many of these suppliers sell directly online.

Buying from large general retailers or marketplace sellers isn’t automatically bad, but it requires more caution. Third-party marketplace listings are where adulterated and mislabeled oils are most common. If you buy from a marketplace, verify that the seller provides batch testing, uses dark glass bottles, and includes full botanical information. When in doubt, ordering directly from a specialist supplier removes most of the guesswork.
