Research shows that consuming more than about 40 grams in a single sitting doesn’t provide additional benefit for muscle maintenance. Your body can only use so much protein at once for muscle repair, and the excess gets used for energy or stored.

If your daily target is 100 grams, for example, three meals with 25 to 30 grams each plus a snack with 15 to 20 grams is a reasonable structure. This is often the trickiest part for people who eat a carb-heavy breakfast (toast, cereal, oatmeal) and load all their protein into dinner. Safe Upper Limits

For healthy adults who aren’t elite athletes or competitive bodybuilders, Harvard Health suggests keeping total protein intake at or below 2 grams per kilogram of ideal body weight. For a 140-pound person, that’s about 125 grams per day. People with existing kidney disease should be more cautious, as high-protein diets increase the workload on the kidneys. But for people with normal kidney function, intakes in the 1.0 to 2.0 g/kg range are well within safe territory.

Putting It All Together

Here’s a quick walkthrough. Say you weigh 170 pounds and do moderate exercise three times a week while trying to lose weight:
