The Dexcom G6 is factory-calibrated, meaning it doesn’t require fingerstick calibrations to work accurately. When you enter the sensor code printed on your sensor’s adhesive patch, the system uses that code to calibrate itself. But you can still manually calibrate if your readings seem off, and in one specific scenario, you’ll be required to. Here’s how it all works.
When You Actually Need to Calibrate
If you enter the four-digit sensor code when starting a new session, calibration is entirely optional for the life of that sensor. The factory calibration handles everything. Most users never need to touch the calibration feature.
The exception is if you skip the sensor code and select “no code” during startup. This puts the G6 into a mode that requires two fingerstick calibrations during the initial warmup period and then additional calibrations every 12 hours for the rest of the session. Some users end up in no-code mode accidentally by misreading or losing the code on their sensor packaging, so it’s worth keeping track of that number before you peel the backing off.
Even with a valid sensor code entered, Dexcom recommends using a fingerstick meter if your symptoms don’t match what the sensor is showing. If you feel low but your G6 reads normal, check with a meter. If that meter reading fits your symptoms better than the CGM number, treat based on the meter value. You can then enter that meter value as a calibration to bring the sensor back in line.
How to Enter a Calibration
The process takes about 30 seconds once you have a fingerstick reading ready.
In the Dexcom app: Tap Settings, then Calibrate. Enter your blood glucose value from your meter and press Save.
On the Dexcom receiver: Go to Menu, then Calibrate. Enter your blood glucose value and press Save.
The system will use that value to adjust its algorithm. You should see your CGM readings shift closer to your meter reading within a few minutes.
Getting an Accurate Fingerstick
A calibration is only as good as the fingerstick you feed it. Contamination on your fingertips is the single biggest source of error, and it matters more than most people realize. Research on fingerstick testing found that handling fruit before testing can falsely elevate readings by more than 250 mg/dL. Even wiping with five alcohol swabs didn’t fully eliminate the contamination from most fruits.
This isn’t just an academic concern. If you enter a falsely high fingerstick value as a calibration, the G6 shifts its readings upward to match. That means it will under-report low blood sugar going forward, which is exactly when accuracy matters most.
The fix is simple: wash your hands with soap and water and dry them thoroughly before testing. Use the side of your fingertip rather than the pad, and make sure you’re getting a clean, round drop of blood without squeezing hard. Milking the finger can dilute the sample with tissue fluid and skew the reading low.
What the 20/20 Rule Means for You
The G6’s accuracy standard is sometimes called the 20/20 rule. When your blood sugar is at or below 100 mg/dL, the sensor reading should be within 20 mg/dL of a fingerstick. When your blood sugar is above 100 mg/dL, the reading should be within 20% of a fingerstick.
So if your meter says 80 mg/dL, a G6 reading anywhere from 60 to 100 is within spec. If your meter says 200 mg/dL, the G6 could read 160 to 240 and still be considered accurate. If your readings consistently fall outside those ranges, calibration can help pull things back into alignment. If they’re within those windows, the sensor is working as intended and calibrating may not improve anything.
Handling Calibration Errors
Sometimes you’ll enter a calibration and the sensor can’t use it. You might see a “Calibration Error” screen or find “Calibration Not Used” in your history tab. This usually means the value you entered was too far from what the sensor expected, or the sensor was in the middle of a rapid glucose change when you calibrated.
If this happens, wait 15 minutes, take a fresh fingerstick, and try again. Don’t rapid-fire calibrations back to back. The sensor needs time to process each one. If you keep getting errors after two or three attempts spaced 15 minutes apart, the sensor itself may be having trouble and could need replacement.
Timing Tips That Improve Results
Calibrate when your blood sugar is relatively stable, not while it’s rising or falling quickly. The G6 measures glucose in the fluid between your cells, which lags behind your blood by several minutes. During a fast spike after a meal or a rapid drop from insulin, your fingerstick and your sensor are measuring different moments in time. Calibrating during these swings can actually make readings less accurate.
The first 24 hours of a new sensor tend to show the most variability as the sensor settles into the tissue. If you’re going to calibrate at all, waiting until day two often gives better results. And when you do calibrate, one well-timed calibration with a clean fingerstick is better than multiple rushed ones throughout the day.
