How to Check a Cat’s Blood Sugar at Home

Checking a cat’s blood sugar at home requires a small glucometer, lancets, and a drop of blood from the ear or paw pad. The process takes under a minute once you and your cat are used to it, and it’s the same basic idea as human finger-stick testing. Most cat owners learn this skill because their cat has been diagnosed with diabetes and needs regular monitoring between vet visits.

Equipment You Need

The core supplies are a portable blood glucose meter, compatible test strips, an automatic lancing device, and lancets. Veterinary-specific glucometers (like the AlphaTRAK) are calibrated for animal blood and tend to be more accurate for cats than human meters. Human glucometers often read lower than the true value when used on cat blood, because of differences in how glucose is distributed between red blood cells and plasma in feline versus human blood. That said, some studies have found the difference doesn’t always change treatment decisions, and your vet may be comfortable with a human meter if cost is a concern. Ask which meter they recommend and whether they want you to use a specific brand so your home readings are comparable to their in-clinic results.

Beyond the meter, keep a few extras on hand: warm damp gauze or a cloth (to increase blood flow to the sampling site), petroleum jelly if your cat is longhaired, and a small notebook or app to log each reading with the time and date.

Where to Get the Blood Sample

The ear is the most common site. You’re aiming for the marginal ear vein, which runs along the outer edge of the ear flap. You can usually see or feel it, especially in cats with lighter or thinner ears. Hold the ear up to a light and look for the vein running near the margin.

Paw pads are a reliable alternative. A 2024 study in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery found no significant difference in glucose readings or first-attempt success rates between the ear and the paw pad. Cats tolerated paw pad sampling better than expected, and the drop size can be increased by gently squeezing the pad. The one downside: about a third of cats resist having a hind paw pulled out from under their body, so front paw pads may be easier. Standard lancets work fine on paw pads, whereas the ear sometimes requires a vacuum-style lancing device.

If you’re testing daily or multiple times a day, alternating between the ear and paw pad gives each site time to recover.

Step-by-Step Testing Process

Start by getting your cat settled in a calm, comfortable position. Use the least amount of physical restraint possible. Many owners find that a lap, a favorite blanket, or a countertop the cat is already used to works best. Treats before and after help build a positive association.

If you’re using the ear, apply a warm, damp gauze pad to the ear for 15 to 30 seconds. This increases blood flow and makes it much easier to get a usable drop. For longhaired cats, dab a thin layer of petroleum jelly over the sampling spot so the blood forms a droplet instead of wicking into the fur.

Place the lancing device over the vein and trigger it. A small drop of blood should form almost immediately. Insert a test strip into your glucometer (this usually turns it on automatically), then touch the strip’s tip to the blood drop. The meter will display a reading within a few seconds. Apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze pad to stop any bleeding at the site.

For paw pads, the process is the same: warm the paw briefly, lance the large central pad, let a drop form, and apply the test strip. If the drop is too small, squeeze the pad gently to coax out more blood.

Normal and Target Blood Sugar Ranges

A healthy cat’s fasting blood glucose typically falls between 54 and 117 mg/dL. For a diabetic cat on insulin, the treatment goal is to keep glucose between 72 and 180 mg/dL over the course of the day. Readings consistently above 180 mg/dL suggest the diabetes isn’t well controlled, while readings below 65 mg/dL are considered hypoglycemic.

Hypoglycemia is the more immediately dangerous direction. Below about 49 mg/dL, brain function starts to suffer, and cats may become wobbly, disoriented, or unusually quiet. If the meter reads below 20 mg/dL or displays “low,” the cat may be stuporous or comatose. This is a veterinary emergency. If you see a very low reading and your cat is showing neurological signs, rub a small amount of corn syrup or honey on the gums and get to a vet immediately.

How to Do a Glucose Curve

A glucose curve maps your cat’s blood sugar over an entire dosing cycle and is the main tool for assessing whether an insulin dose is working. The standard protocol: take a reading just before the morning insulin injection, then every two hours until the evening dose. For most cats on twice-daily insulin, that’s a 12-hour curve with about seven readings total.

What you’re looking for is the nadir, the lowest point the blood sugar reaches after insulin is given. The nadir tells your vet whether the dose is too high (glucose drops dangerously low), too low (glucose barely dips), or just right. If you don’t see a clear low point during the 12-hour window, your vet may ask you to extend the curve to 14 or 16 hours.

Log every reading with the exact time. Note anything unusual: if the cat vomited, refused food, seemed stressed, or was more active than normal. All of this context helps your vet interpret the curve and adjust the dose.

Why Stress Can Skew Results

Cats are notorious for stress-induced high blood sugar, and this is one of the trickiest parts of feline glucose monitoring. A stressed cat can push blood sugar well above the kidney’s threshold for spilling glucose into urine, mimicking full-blown diabetes even when the cat doesn’t have it. The phenomenon is unpredictable: some visibly anxious cats show normal glucose, while some apparently calm cats spike dramatically.

This matters at home too, not just at the vet. If your cat fights the testing process, the reading you get may be artificially high. Over time, as both you and your cat get more comfortable with the routine, stress-related spikes tend to decrease. If you see an unexpectedly high single reading but your cat seems fine otherwise, don’t panic or adjust insulin on your own. One reading is a snapshot. Patterns across a full glucose curve or multiple days of testing are far more reliable.

For diagnosis specifically, a single high reading is never enough. Vets confirm diabetes by demonstrating persistent high blood sugar over time, often supplemented by a blood test called fructosamine that reflects average glucose over the previous two to three weeks and isn’t affected by momentary stress.

Signs Your Cat’s Blood Sugar May Be Off

Even before you reach for the meter, certain physical signs can signal that something is wrong. High blood sugar typically causes increased thirst, more frequent urination, increased hunger despite weight loss, a dull or unkempt coat, and sometimes vomiting or recurrent bladder infections. These develop gradually and are often what prompts a diabetes diagnosis in the first place.

Low blood sugar comes on faster and looks different: weakness, trembling, unsteadiness, glazed eyes, or sudden lethargy. In severe cases, seizures or loss of consciousness. If your diabetic cat shows any of these signs between scheduled tests, check blood sugar right away rather than waiting for the next planned reading.
