You can check your heart rate at home in under a minute using nothing but two fingers and a clock. Place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist or the side of your neck, count the beats you feel, and you have your pulse. A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm), though athletes often sit in the 40s or 50s.
Before You Measure: Get a Clean Reading
Your heart rate shifts throughout the day based on what you’ve been doing, eating, and feeling. To get a reliable resting number, avoid measuring within one to two hours after exercise or a stressful event. Wait at least an hour after drinking coffee or other caffeinated drinks, which can cause temporary spikes. Don’t take a reading after standing or sitting in one position for a long stretch, as that can skew results too.
The best time to check is first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed, or after sitting quietly for five to ten minutes. This gives you a true resting heart rate you can track consistently over days and weeks.
The Wrist Method (Radial Pulse)
Turn one hand palm-up. Place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the inside of your opposite wrist, just below the base of your thumb. You’re feeling for the radial artery, which runs along the thumb side of your wrist. Press lightly until you feel a steady throb. If you push too hard, you can actually compress the artery and lose the beat entirely.
Once you’ve found the pulse, look at a clock with a second hand or start a timer. Count every beat you feel for a full 60 seconds. That number is your heart rate in beats per minute.
You can use a shortcut: count for 15 seconds and multiply by four. This is how many nurses do it in practice. Research on pulse-counting accuracy found the average error with a 15-second count is roughly 2 bpm, which is close enough for everyday tracking. But if you get a reading of 70 bpm using the 15-second method, your true rate could reasonably be anywhere from 65 to 75. For the most precise result, count the full minute.
The Neck Method (Carotid Pulse)
The carotid artery in your neck produces a stronger pulse that’s sometimes easier to find, especially if you have trouble feeling your wrist. Place the tips of your index and middle fingers in the groove next to your windpipe, on one side of your neck. Press gently until you feel the beat, then count the same way.
A few safety rules apply here. Never press on both sides of your neck at the same time, as this can make you dizzy, lightheaded, or cause you to faint. Use light pressure only. Pressing too hard can temporarily block blood flow. And if you’ve been told you have plaque buildup in your neck arteries, skip this method and use your wrist instead.
Using a Smartphone App
Most smartphones can measure your heart rate through the camera. You place your fingertip over the rear camera and flash, and the app detects tiny changes in skin color as blood pulses through your fingertip. This is the same optical technology used in hospital pulse oximeters, just miniaturized into your phone.
These apps are surprisingly accurate for resting measurements. A review of studies comparing smartphone camera readings to clinical-grade electrocardiograms in healthy people found correlations above 0.98 across nearly every study tested, meaning the phone readings closely matched the gold standard. That said, accuracy drops if your finger moves during the reading or if you’re in very cold conditions where blood flow to your fingertips is reduced. Hold still, keep your finger flat against the camera, and take the reading in a comfortable room.
Wearables, Chest Straps, and Pulse Oximeters
If you want continuous or frequent monitoring, several device categories are worth knowing about.
- Wrist-worn trackers and smartwatches use small LED lights pressed against your skin to detect blood flow. They work well for resting heart rate and general trends, though they can lose accuracy during high-intensity movement when sweat or wrist motion interferes with the sensor.
- Chest strap monitors detect the electrical signals of your heartbeat through a band worn around your ribcage. The band needs to be slightly damp or used with conductive gel where the sensors touch skin. These tend to be the most accurate consumer option, especially during exercise.
- Smart rings sit on your finger and use the same optical detection as wrist wearables. Their snug fit and finger placement can provide steadier readings than a wristband that shifts around.
- Pulse oximeters clip onto a fingertip and measure both your pulse rate and blood oxygen level. Battery-powered home versions are inexpensive and widely available. They give a quick spot-check reading in about 10 to 15 seconds.
What Your Resting Heart Rate Means
For adults 18 and older, 60 to 100 bpm at rest is considered normal. Children run higher: a newborn’s resting rate ranges from 100 to 205 bpm, a toddler’s from 98 to 140, and a school-age child’s from 75 to 118. By the teenage years, the range settles to the adult 60 to 100.
A resting heart rate consistently below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. In trained athletes, this is normal and reflects an efficient heart. In someone who isn’t particularly active, it can sometimes signal a problem, particularly if it comes with dizziness, fainting, unusual fatigue, or shortness of breath.
On the other end, a resting rate consistently above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. Serious symptoms from a fast heart rate are uncommon if the rate stays below 150 bpm in someone with a healthy heart, but people with existing heart conditions can become symptomatic at lower rates. Chest pain, confusion, fainting, or feeling like your heart is pounding when you’re at rest are all signs worth getting checked promptly.
Over time, tracking your resting heart rate can reveal useful patterns. A gradual decrease often reflects improving cardiovascular fitness. A sudden or sustained increase from your personal baseline can flag illness, dehydration, stress, or overtraining.
Checking Heart Rate During Exercise
Your heart rate during a workout tells you how hard your cardiovascular system is working. The American Heart Association uses a simple formula to estimate your maximum heart rate: subtract your age from 220. A 40-year-old, for example, has an estimated max of 180 bpm.
From there, exercise intensity breaks into two zones. Moderate-intensity activity, like brisk walking or casual cycling, puts you at 50 to 70% of your max. Vigorous activity, like running or high-intensity interval training, pushes you to 70 to 85%. For that same 40-year-old, moderate intensity means 90 to 126 bpm, and vigorous means 126 to 153 bpm.
Checking your pulse manually mid-workout is tricky because you have to stop moving. A chest strap or wrist-worn monitor gives you a live reading without interrupting your session. If you do check manually, stop briefly, find your pulse within a couple seconds, and count for 15 seconds. Multiply by four. Your heart rate drops quickly once you stop, so a long count will underestimate your working rate.
