How to Check Your Heart Rate Manually or With a Device

You can check your heart rate in under a minute using nothing but two fingers and a clock. Place your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist or the side of your neck, count the beats, and multiply. That’s the core technique, and it’s the same one nurses use. You can also use a smartwatch, a smartphone app, or a fingertip pulse oximeter for a hands-free reading.

The Two-Finger Method at Your Wrist

The wrist is the easiest spot to find your pulse on your own. Turn your hand so your palm faces up. Find the groove between the bone and the tendon on the thumb side of your wrist. Place the tips of your index and middle fingers there (never your thumb, which has its own pulse and will throw off the count). Press lightly until you feel a steady beat. If you’re pushing hard enough to block blood flow, ease up.

Once you feel the beats, watch a clock and count for a full 60 seconds. That number is your heart rate in beats per minute. If you’re short on time, count for 30 seconds and multiply by two, or count for 15 seconds and multiply by four. The shorter the count, the less accurate the result. A study published in Ergonomics found that counting for shorter durations introduces progressively more error because you’re rounding partial beats and then amplifying that rounding with the multiplier. When precision matters, count the full minute.

Checking Your Pulse at the Neck

Your neck pulse is stronger and easier to find during exercise or when your wrist pulse feels faint. Place two fingertips in the groove next to your windpipe, on one side only. Never press both sides of your neck at the same time. Doing so can make you dizzy, lightheaded, or cause you to faint. The counting method is the same: light pressure, steady count, 60 seconds for the most reliable number.

How Smartwatches Measure Your Pulse

The green lights on the back of a smartwatch or fitness tracker aren’t decorative. They shine into your skin, and a sensor reads the light that bounces back. When your heart beats, blood surges into tiny vessels in your wrist, and that extra blood absorbs more light. Between beats, blood volume drops and more light reflects back. The device reads these fluctuations and converts them into a heart rate number.

This optical method works well at rest and during steady exercise. It becomes less reliable during activities with lots of wrist movement, like rowing or weight lifting, because motion disrupts the light signal. Chest strap monitors, by contrast, detect the electrical signals your heart produces with each beat. That’s the same type of signal an ECG measures, which is why chest straps are the most accurate wearable option regardless of whether you’re sitting still or sprinting.

Using Your Smartphone Camera

Many smartphone apps can read your heart rate through the phone’s built-in camera. You place your fingertip over the camera lens, the flash illuminates the blood vessels in your finger, and the camera detects the same kind of light-absorption changes that a smartwatch uses. A review in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that the best finger-contact apps came within about 2 beats per minute of an ECG reading, which is clinically impressive for a free tool.

Some apps try to read your pulse from your face using the front camera, no finger contact required. These performed significantly worse in the same review, especially at higher heart rates, where they tended to underestimate. If you’re using a phone app, the finger-on-camera method is far more reliable than the face-scanning approach.

What a Normal Resting Heart Rate Looks Like

For adults, a normal resting heart rate falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute. “Resting” means you’re sitting or lying down, awake, and haven’t recently exercised or had caffeine. Athletes and people who are very physically active often have resting rates in the 40s or 50s because their hearts pump more blood per beat and don’t need to beat as often. People who are mostly sedentary tend to land toward the higher end of the range.

Children’s hearts beat faster. Newborns range from 100 to 205 bpm. Toddlers sit between 98 and 140. School-age kids (5 to 12) typically fall between 75 and 118. By adolescence, the range narrows to the adult norm of 60 to 100.

Tips for an Accurate Reading

Your heart rate responds to almost everything: caffeine, stress, temperature, hydration, body position, even digestion. To get a consistent baseline, check your resting heart rate first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, or after sitting quietly for at least five minutes. Avoid measuring right after coffee, exercise, or a stressful phone call if you want a number you can compare day to day.

If you’re using a wrist-based wearable, make sure the band sits snug against your skin without gaps. Loose bands let ambient light leak in and produce erratic readings. Tattoos on the wrist can also interfere with the optical sensor by changing how light passes through the skin. A fingertip pulse oximeter is a good alternative in medical settings but isn’t designed for use during exercise.

Calculating Your Target Heart Rate for Exercise

Knowing your resting heart rate lets you estimate a personalized exercise zone. The formula recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine works like this: subtract your age from 220 to get your estimated maximum heart rate. Then subtract your resting heart rate from that number to find your “heart rate reserve.” Multiply the reserve by 0.6 for the low end of the zone and 0.8 for the high end, then add your resting heart rate back to each result.

For example, a 40-year-old with a resting heart rate of 70 has an estimated max of 180 and a reserve of 110. Sixty percent of 110 is 66, plus 70 equals 136. Eighty percent of 110 is 88, plus 70 equals 158. Their moderate-to-vigorous exercise zone is roughly 136 to 158 bpm. This personalized approach is more useful than generic age-based charts because it accounts for your current fitness level.

Signs Your Heart Rate Needs Attention

A resting heart rate consistently above 100 bpm is called tachycardia. A rate below 60 bpm is bradycardia, though in fit individuals this is perfectly normal. What matters more than any single number is the pattern and how you feel. A heart that frequently races, slows dramatically, or seems to skip beats is worth having evaluated. Chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting alongside an unusual heart rate are emergency symptoms that need immediate care.
