Smartwatches vs. Dedicated Devices
Consumer smartwatches like the Apple Watch now include fall detection and emergency calling, which raises an obvious question: do you even need a dedicated medical alert system? The answer depends on what kind of response you want.
An Apple Watch connects directly to 911 when it detects a fall or when you activate its emergency feature. That’s fast, but it skips the triage step. You get first responders, period. A dedicated medical alert system connects you to a monitoring center first, where trained staff assess whether you actually need an ambulance. For someone who falls occasionally but doesn’t always need emergency medical care, that middle step can prevent unnecessary (and expensive) ambulance dispatches.
Smartwatches also require daily charging, a paired smartphone for full functionality, and comfort with small touchscreens. Dedicated medical alert pendants are simpler by design: one button, no screen, and battery life ranging from about 80 hours to four days on mobile units depending on the model. If the person using the system has cognitive decline, limited dexterity, or simply doesn’t want to manage another piece of technology, a dedicated device is the more reliable choice.
Water Resistance Ratings
Falls in the bathroom are among the most common and most dangerous, so your wearable button needs to survive showers. Look for a water resistance rating of at least IPX7 on the pendant or wristband. Before you buy, test the device’s range inside the actual home where it will be used. Walk to the farthest room, the backyard, the garage. Press the button and confirm the connection is clear. A system that can’t reach the base station from the bathroom or basement isn’t protecting the places where emergencies are most likely to happen.
