Cleaning a nasal aspirator takes less than two minutes, but the method depends on which type you have. The core principle is the same across all designs: flush out mucus immediately after use, wash with warm soapy water, and dry thoroughly to prevent mold. Skip any of those steps and you’ll end up with bacteria buildup or hardened mucus that’s nearly impossible to remove.
Cleaning a Bulb Syringe
Bulb syringes are the simplest aspirators, but their sealed design makes them the trickiest to clean properly. You can’t pop them apart, so you have to flush them repeatedly from the inside.
Start by squeezing the bulb to push out all the mucus, then draw warm soapy water into it. Shake the bulb vigorously with the soapy water inside, then squeeze it out. Repeat this several times until the water runs clear. After that, rinse the same way with plain water, filling and emptying the bulb multiple times to remove all soap residue.
The biggest challenge with bulb syringes is drying. Stand the syringe upright with the tip pointing down so water can drain out completely. If moisture stays trapped inside, mold can grow in the dark interior where you can’t see it. If you ever notice discoloration, a musty smell, or visible mold when you squeeze water through, throw it away and get a new one. Bulb syringes are inexpensive enough that replacing them regularly is worthwhile.
Cleaning an Oral Suction Aspirator
Oral suction devices like the NoseFrida come apart into several pieces: a nasal tip, a tube, and a mouthpiece with a hygiene filter. The filter is the most important part to stay on top of. Replace it after every single use. Reusing a filter defeats its purpose, since it’s designed to trap mucus and bacteria before they reach the mouthpiece.
After removing the used filter, pull the device apart completely. Wash the nasal tip and tube in warm soapy water, then rinse thoroughly. You can also run them through a bottle sterilizer if you prefer extra disinfection. Let all the pieces air dry fully before reassembling. The tube can hold water droplets for a while, so give it extra time or hang it where air can circulate through both ends.
Cleaning an Electric Aspirator
Electric aspirators have both waterproof and non-waterproof parts, and confusing the two is the fastest way to ruin the device. The nozzles and collection cup are safe to wash. The base unit, which contains the motor and batteries, is not.
Remove the nozzles and collection cup from the base, then rinse them under hot water. If mucus has dried and hardened inside a nozzle, soak the pieces in hot soapy water for two to three minutes, then use a toothpick to clear any stubborn buildup. Silicone nozzles can go in a bottle sterilizer, but keep the plastic collection cup out of one because the heat will warp it. Do not microwave any pieces.
For the base unit, simply wipe the outside with a baby wipe or damp cloth. Never run it under water or submerge it.
Dishwasher-Safe Parts
Some aspirators are rated for dishwasher cleaning, but only specific components. Braun’s manual aspirator, for example, allows the mucus chamber, nose tip, and mouthpiece to go on the top rack. If your device is labeled dishwasher safe, stick to the top rack to keep parts away from the heating element at the bottom, which can warp plastic.
When in doubt, check the packaging or manufacturer’s website. Silicone tips almost always tolerate dishwasher heat. Hard plastic reservoirs are less predictable, so hand washing in hot soapy water is the safer default.
Drying to Prevent Mold
Thorough drying matters as much as the washing itself. Leftover moisture inside any aspirator creates a breeding ground for mold, and once mold takes hold, the device needs to be replaced entirely. After washing, set all pieces upside down on a clean towel or drying rack so water drains out rather than pooling inside. Don’t reassemble the parts until everything is completely dry.
Bulb syringes deserve special attention here because they trap moisture internally. Squeeze the bulb several times after rinsing to push out as much water as possible, then store it tip-down in a spot with good airflow. Some parents keep a spare bulb syringe in rotation so one can dry fully while the other is in use during a cold.
When to Replace Your Aspirator
Even with careful cleaning, aspirator parts degrade over time. Silicone tips can lose their flexibility and stop forming a gentle seal. Plastic components can crack, and those tiny crevices harbor bacteria that washing can’t fully reach. Inspect your aspirator regularly for visible cracks, discoloration, warping, or a persistent odor after cleaning. Any of those signs mean it’s time for a replacement.
Filters in oral suction devices should be replaced after every use, not cleaned and reused. If you run out of filters, stop using the device until you have new ones. For electric aspirators, check the nozzle and collection cup for wear each time you clean them. A nozzle that no longer fits snugly on the base won’t suction effectively and could also be harder to keep clean.
As a general rule, if you’ve been using the same bulb syringe through an entire illness, give it a thorough inspection once your child recovers. Heavy use over several days of a cold accelerates wear. Starting the next illness with a fresh device is a simple way to avoid reintroducing old bacteria.
