How to Clean and Sterilize a Nipple Shield

Clean your nipple shield with hot soapy water after every single feeding, and sterilize it in boiling water for 20 minutes before its very first use. That two-step routine, daily cleaning plus initial sterilization, keeps milk residue and bacteria from building up on the silicone surface between feeds.

Sterilize Before First Use

A brand-new nipple shield is not sterile out of the package. Before you use it for the first time, place it in a pot of boiling water for 20 minutes. This kills any bacteria or manufacturing residue on the silicone. Let it cool completely before handling, then store it in a clean, dry container until you’re ready to use it.

Cleaning After Every Feed

After each feeding session, wash the nipple shield in hot soapy water. Use regular dish soap, not antibacterial soap, which can contain additives that aren’t considered safe for repeated daily use on items that touch your baby’s mouth. Rinse the shield thoroughly under running water to remove all soap residue, since leftover detergent can irritate your baby’s skin or alter the taste of milk.

Pay attention to the small holes at the tip of the shield where milk flows through. Milk residue collects there easily. A gentle rub with your fingertip or a soft brush while washing helps clear those openings.

Why Thorough Cleaning Matters

Silicone surfaces are prone to bacterial buildup when milk residue is left behind. Research on silicone used in contact with milk has shown that common bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli, readily colonize these surfaces. Repeated cleaning itself can roughen silicone over time, creating tiny grooves where bacteria settle in more easily. That’s why rinsing alone isn’t enough. You need soap and warm water to break down the milk fat layer where bacteria thrive.

When to Sanitize More Thoroughly

Daily sanitizing (beyond just washing) is recommended by the CDC if your baby is younger than 2 months old, was born prematurely, or has a weakened immune system. You can sanitize by placing the shield in boiling water for a few minutes or using a microwave steam sterilizer bag designed for baby products.

For older, healthy babies, daily sanitizing isn’t strictly necessary as long as you’re washing the shield carefully with soap and hot water after every use. If you run it through a dishwasher with a hot water cycle and heated drying setting, that counts as sanitizing on its own.

Drying and Storing Between Feeds

Always air dry the nipple shield after washing. Don’t use a dish towel, paper towel, or blow on it to speed things up. Towels and breath introduce new bacteria onto the freshly cleaned surface, defeating the purpose of washing. Place the shield on a clean drying rack or a fresh paper towel and let it dry completely before putting it away.

Store the dry shield in a clean, dry container with a lid. Tossing it loose into a diaper bag or leaving it damp on a countertop invites mold growth and contamination. A small, dedicated case (many nipple shields come with one) works well. If you’re out and about, a clean resealable bag is a reasonable short-term option.

Soaps and Products to Avoid

Stick to plain dish soap. Avoid antibacterial soaps, scented detergents, and anything with added dyes or fragrances. These additives can leave residues on silicone that your baby then puts in their mouth during the next feed. You don’t need specialty “baby dish soap” either. Standard, fragrance-free dish soap does the job.

Harsh chemicals like bleach-based cleaners or abrasive scrubbing pads can degrade silicone over time. A soft cloth, clean sponge, or your fingers are the safest tools for washing.

When to Replace Your Nipple Shield

Inspect the shield regularly for signs of wear: discoloration, sticky or tacky texture, thinning silicone, tears, or a persistent smell even after thorough cleaning. Any of these mean the silicone has broken down enough that cleaning can no longer keep it hygienic. Most nipple shields hold up for several weeks to a couple of months with daily use, but replace yours sooner if you notice any damage. A cracked or degraded shield can also change the way your baby latches, making feeding less effective.
