Once a day, give it a more thorough cleaning: wet the brush, add a small drop of gentle dish soap, and lightly scrub all surfaces of the retainer, paying attention to where the wire meets the acrylic and any textured areas on the palate piece. Home ultrasonic cleaners, which use high-frequency vibrations to agitate a water bath, have become an increasingly common option. They do offer one clear advantage: scanning electron microscopy of retainers cleaned ultrasonically shows fewer surface scratches compared to manual brushing. Less scratching means fewer places for bacteria to take hold.
However, the cleaning liquid matters more than the device itself. A clinical study comparing different retainer cleaning methods found that ultrasonic cleaning with plain water actually performed worse than manual brushing with toothpaste for reducing microbial contamination. The best results came from ultrasonic cleaning combined with an antimicrobial mouthwash, which produced the lowest bacterial counts of all methods tested. So if you invest in an ultrasonic cleaner, use it with an appropriate cleaning solution rather than water alone.

A retainer sits against the roof of your mouth and wraps around your teeth for hours every day.
