How to Clean Out Your Ears at Home Safely

Your ears mostly clean themselves. Skin inside the ear canal slowly migrates outward, carrying wax, dust, and dead cells toward the opening, where the wax dries, flakes, and falls out on its own. Chewing and jaw movement help push it along. So “cleaning your ears” at home really means dealing with the occasional buildup that this natural process can’t handle, without accidentally making things worse.

Why You Probably Don’t Need to Clean Them

Earwax exists for a reason. It traps dirt, repels water, and has mild antibacterial properties that protect the delicate skin of your ear canal. Most people produce just enough wax that the self-cleaning conveyor belt keeps things balanced. The wax accumulates, dries out, and tumbles out of the ear on its own. If your ears feel fine and you hear clearly, there’s nothing to clean.

That said, some people consistently overproduce wax or have narrow, curved ear canals that slow the natural migration. Hearing aid users and frequent earbud wearers also tend to push wax back inward. If you notice muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, or mild discomfort, a gentle home approach can help.

Softening Drops: The Safest First Step

The simplest home method is to soften hardened wax so it can work its way out naturally. You have several options, all applied the same way: tilt your head to one side and use a clean eyedropper to put a few drops into the ear canal. Let the liquid sit for a few minutes, then tilt your head the other way and let it drain onto a towel.

Effective softening agents include:

  • Mineral oil or baby oil: Gentle and inexpensive. A few drops once or twice a day for a day or two is usually enough to loosen things up.
  • Glycerin: Works similarly to oil, lubricating and softening the wax.
  • Hydrogen peroxide (3% household strength): Fill the ear canal with a few drops using a dropper. You’ll hear and feel fizzing as it breaks down the wax. Let it fizz, then drain.
  • Over-the-counter carbamide peroxide drops: These are sold specifically for earwax removal. They soften and loosen wax through a gentle foaming action. Don’t use them for more than four consecutive days without checking with a healthcare provider.

For stubborn buildup, you may need to repeat the softening process over two or three days before the wax loosens enough to come out.

Warm Water Irrigation

If softening drops alone don’t do the job, the next step is gentle irrigation. After a day or two of using drops, you can flush the loosened wax out with warm water and a rubber-bulb syringe (sold at most pharmacies).

The water temperature matters more than you might think. Water that’s too cold or too hot can trigger intense dizziness by stimulating the balance system in your inner ear. Aim for body temperature, roughly 38 to 40 degrees Celsius (about 100 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit). Test it on the inside of your wrist the way you’d check a baby bottle.

Tilt your head to one side, gently pull your outer ear up and back to straighten the canal, and squeeze the bulb to direct a soft stream of water into the opening. Don’t force it. Let the water flow back out into a bowl or the sink. You may need to repeat the full cycle of softening and irrigating a few times before the wax comes free.

Drying Your Ears Afterward

Moisture left sitting in the ear canal after irrigation creates a perfect environment for bacterial growth, which can lead to swimmer’s ear. Take a minute to dry things out. Tilt your head to let gravity drain the water, and gently pat the outer ear with a towel. Tugging lightly on your earlobe while tilting your head can help straighten the canal and release trapped water. Chewing or yawning also moves the jaw joint connected to the ear canal, encouraging drainage.

If water still feels stuck, a hair dryer on the cool, low setting held several inches from the ear can help evaporate the remaining moisture. Don’t use the warm setting close to your ear.

What Not to Put in Your Ears

Cotton Swabs

This is the most common mistake. Cotton swabs push wax deeper into the canal rather than removing it, compacting it against the eardrum. They also scratch the canal lining, cause bleeding, and can perforate the eardrum. Pieces of cotton can break off and get lodged inside. The only safe use for a cotton swab is wiping the outer folds of your ear, the part you can see.

Ear Candles

Ear candles are hollow wax cones that you insert into the ear canal and light on fire, supposedly creating a vacuum that draws wax out. They don’t work. The FDA has determined there is no validated scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness, and the agency considers them dangerous. The real risks include burns to the face, hair, and ear canal, hot wax dripping into the ear, and punctured eardrums. They’re not worth trying.

Pointed Objects

Bobby pins, keys, pen caps, and similar items carry the same risks as cotton swabs but worse. Anything rigid inserted into the ear canal can puncture the eardrum or push wax into a hard impaction that only a doctor can remove.

When Home Methods Aren’t Enough

Some signs suggest the problem has moved beyond what you should handle at home. If you experience significant hearing loss in one ear, persistent ear pain, ringing, discharge, or a foul smell, the issue may be a full impaction or something else entirely. One useful distinction: earwax buildup does not cause fever or cold-like symptoms. If you have ear pain along with fever, congestion, or a recent upper respiratory illness, that pattern points toward an ear infection rather than wax, and home flushing won’t help.

People with a history of ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, or ear tubes should skip home irrigation entirely. Water entering the middle ear through a hole in the eardrum can cause serious infection. In these cases, a healthcare provider can remove wax safely using specialized suction or instruments under direct visualization.
