The most effective way to clean out your sinuses is with a saline nasal rinse, which physically flushes mucus, allergens, and irritants from your nasal passages. Saline irrigation works by directly cleansing the sinus cavities while also increasing the speed at which the tiny hair-like structures lining your nose move mucus along, helping your sinuses clear themselves more efficiently even after you finish rinsing. Choosing a Rinse Device
You have a few options for getting saline into your sinuses, and they all work on the same basic principle: gravity or gentle pressure moves saltwater in one nostril and out the other.
- Neti pot: A small teapot-shaped container that uses gravity to pour saline through your nasal passages. It delivers a gentle, low-pressure flow.
- Squeeze bottle: A plastic bottle you squeeze to push saline through your nose. This gives you more control over pressure and tends to reach deeper into the sinuses than a neti pot.
- Bulb syringe: A rubber bulb that you fill and gently squeeze. Common for children but works for adults too.
- Powered irrigators: Battery-operated devices that deliver a pulsating stream. These can feel more thorough but aren’t necessary for most people.

Making the Right Saline Solution
A standard saline solution uses 0.9% salt concentration, which matches the salt level in your body’s own fluids. Never use plain tap water for sinus rinsing. Your nasal passages provide a direct path to your brain, and tap water can contain organisms that are harmless to swallow but dangerous when introduced through the nose. The CDC recommends using one of these safe water sources:
- Distilled or sterile water: Sold at any grocery store or pharmacy. This is the easiest and safest option.
- Boiled water: Bring tap water to a rolling boil for 1 minute (3 minutes if you live above 6,500 feet elevation), then let it cool to lukewarm before use.
- Disinfected water: If you can’t boil water, you can add household bleach (4% to 5.9% concentration) at 5 drops per quart, stir, and let it stand for at least 30 minutes.
Store any unused prepared water in a clean, covered container. Don’t save it for more than a day or two.
Step-by-Step Rinsing Technique
Stand over a sink or in the shower. Fill your device with the saline solution at a comfortable lukewarm temperature. Tilt your head down and sideways so one nostril is positioned above the other. Breathe through your open mouth the entire time.
Place the spout or tip snugly against your upper nostril and begin pouring or squeezing gently. The saline will flow through your nasal cavity and drain out the lower nostril. If water flows into your mouth instead, tilt your head further downward. Use about half the solution on one side, then switch to the other nostril. When you’re done, gently blow your nose to clear any remaining liquid. Avoid blowing forcefully, which can push fluid into your ear canals.
Most people rinse once or twice daily when dealing with congestion or allergies. For chronic sinusitis, daily rinsing can be part of a long-term routine.
Keeping Your Device Clean
After every use, rinse your neti pot or squeeze bottle thoroughly with safe water (distilled, sterile, or previously boiled) and let it air dry completely.
