Cleaning piercing jewelry comes down to the metal or material it’s made from. Most metal body jewelry does well with a simple soak in warm water and mild soap, followed by a gentle scrub with a soft-bristled brush. But some materials, like wood, porous gemstones, and color-anodized metals, need special handling to avoid permanent damage. Here’s how to clean every common type safely.
The Basic Method for Metal Jewelry
This approach works for implant-grade titanium, surgical steel, solid gold, and niobium in their natural (non-anodized) finishes. Fill a small bowl with warm water and add a few drops of mild, unscented liquid soap. Avoid anything with dyes, strong fragrances, or antibacterial chemicals beyond what’s in a basic gentle soap. Let the jewelry soak for five to ten minutes to loosen the buildup of skin oils, dead cells, and dried secretions that naturally accumulate around piercings.
After soaking, use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the piece. A baby toothbrush is ideal because its bristles are soft enough to avoid scratching while still reaching into threaded ends, gem settings, and decorative grooves where gunk hides. A small, clean makeup brush also works for intricate pieces. Rinse thoroughly under warm running water, then pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Do not use rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, bleach, or other strong household cleaners on body jewelry. These can damage the finish and irritate your skin the next time you wear the piece. Rough sponges and metal brushes are also off the table. They scratch the surface, creating tiny grooves where bacteria settle in and thrive.
Anodized Titanium and Niobium
The vibrant colors on anodized titanium and niobium come from a thin oxide layer created through an electrical process. That layer is durable during normal wear but surprisingly easy to strip with the wrong cleaning method. Stick to plain soap and water with a soft cloth. For any of these stones, skip ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaners entirely. The high-frequency vibrations can loosen delicate settings, and the rapid temperature changes can crack fragile stones. A damp cloth and a dry follow-up is all you need.
Wood, Bone, and Horn Plugs
Organic materials play by completely different rules than metal. Water is the enemy here. Soaking wood plugs warps them, and even quick rinses can cause swelling or cracking over time. Using an Ultrasonic Cleaner
If you own a small ultrasonic jewelry cleaner (the countertop kind sold for home use), it’s a convenient option for metal body jewelry that doesn’t have porous stones or delicate settings. The device uses high-frequency sound waves to create microscopic bubbles that blast buildup off surfaces, reaching areas a brush can’t. Fill it with warm water and the cleaning solution recommended by the manufacturer, drop your jewelry in, and run a cycle.
Ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe for titanium, surgical steel, solid gold, and niobium, including anodized pieces. It is not safe for pearls, opals, turquoise, emeralds, or any of the porous stones listed above. Antique or vintage pieces with older settings may also be too fragile, as the vibrations can loosen prongs and bezels over time. When in doubt, hand-wash with soap and a soft brush instead.
How Often to Clean
Make it part of your regular hygiene routine. Every time you shower is a natural reminder to give your jewelry a quick rinse if it’s still in your body.
