Every time you eat something containing fermentable carbohydrates (sugar, bread, crackers, dried fruit), plaque bacteria produce acid for roughly 20 to 30 minutes afterward. If you snack frequently throughout the day, your teeth spend more total time under acid attack, and plaque becomes more damaging even if the total amount of sugar you consume isn’t extreme. Frequency matters as much as quantity.
Acidic foods and drinks like citrus juice, soda, and wine also lower the pH in your mouth directly, compounding the effect. Drinking water after meals, chewing sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva, and limiting between-meal snacking all help keep plaque acid production in check. Saliva is your mouth’s natural defense: it neutralizes acid and supplies the calcium and phosphate that remineralize enamel between acid attacks.
Finding Plaque You’ve Missed
Plaque is usually tooth-colored or slightly yellowish, making it nearly invisible. Plaque disclosing tablets or solutions can help. These are chewable tablets or rinses containing a harmless dye (usually vegetable-based, often bright pink or purple) that stains plaque so you can see exactly where it’s accumulating. You chew the tablet, swish, spit, and look in the mirror. The stained areas show you which spots your brushing is consistently missing.
Disclosing tablets are inexpensive, available at most pharmacies, and particularly useful when you’re trying to improve your brushing technique. Using one every week or two for a few weeks can retrain your habits quickly. Dental professionals also use disclosing agents during cleanings to ensure thorough biofilm removal, and research supports the idea that visualizing plaque leads to more complete cleaning.
When You Need Professional Cleaning
Once plaque has hardened into tartar, no amount of brushing or flossing will remove it. A dental hygienist uses specialized instruments (scaling tools or ultrasonic devices) to break tartar off the tooth surface, including below the gum line where you can’t reach. This process is called scaling, and if tartar has extended down the tooth root, root planing smooths the root surface to help gums reattach.
How often you need professional cleaning depends on your individual risk. Some people form tartar quickly and benefit from cleanings every three to four months. Others do well with visits every six to twelve months. If you notice tartar buildup (hard, yellowish or brownish deposits, often behind the lower front teeth or on the outer surfaces of upper molars), that’s a sign your home routine needs adjustment and a professional cleaning is overdue.

Rinse with water after sugary or acidic meals and snacks. Consider using disclosing tablets periodically to check your technique, and get professional cleanings at whatever interval your dental team recommends based on how quickly you accumulate tartar.
The biology is straightforward: plaque reforms within hours of every cleaning, so the goal is never to eliminate it permanently. It’s to disrupt it often enough that it never matures into a thick, acid-producing film or hardens into tartar. Two thorough cleanings a day, with attention to the gum line and the spaces between teeth, is enough for most people to keep their teeth and gums healthy for life.
