How to Clean Plastic Retainers at Home

The best way to clean a plastic retainer is to brush it daily with a soft toothbrush and mild dish soap, then soak it in a retainer cleaning tablet once a week. That simple routine prevents the bacterial buildup, odor, and cloudiness that make retainers unpleasant to wear. Here’s how to do it right and what to avoid.

The Daily Cleaning Routine

Every day, brush your retainer with a dedicated soft-bristled toothbrush and a small drop of liquid dish soap. Use cool or lukewarm water, never hot. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends dish soap specifically because it cleans effectively without scratching the plastic surface. A quick 30 to 60 seconds of gentle brushing removes the thin layer of plaque and saliva proteins that accumulate each time you wear it.

Use a separate toothbrush for your retainer, not the one you use on your teeth.
